I'd love to get linux running on my ps2 but everywhere i've searched for how to do this, it's all using Sony's PS2-linux kit

Using a 3rd party hdd, to use the official linux, you need to use a mod chip with ATAD patching. BlackRhino I beleive you just need to be able to boot backups, but I'm not sure if it needs the chip with patching.

Both will re-format your entire drive, although there is a tutorial floating around the net somewhere where you can have both linux and hdl partitions on the hdd (attached.) I've never got it to work as I'm not familiar with linux.

As for the installation process, This might be a good place to read up on the official linux.
Blackrhino can be found here with instructions.

Heya, thanx a bunch for the reply, I've read a lot about blackrhino and what I've found out so far is that the distro you find on blackrhino's page can't be booted, but there's a version called "ps2.linux.rte.cd.1.0.install.blackrhino.by.ce rf4" that supposedly all you do is burn the disc image onto a disc, and pop it in the ps2 (modded of course).
I've been searching high and low for this image and all I've found is an old torrent that's practically dead, i get a seeder every hour or so. Would you happen to know an active link where I could get this image?

The official linux will use a 3rd party hdd without problem, no need for a chip with ATAD patching...
The easiest way to have both linux and hdl partitions on the same hdd is to use the official beta release...

Oh. Sorry about the misinformation. I didn't know that.

I used this guide for installing the black rhino cerf4 version.

    hxxp://mmm.i42.net/?p=9#comments (change the x's and the m's, to t's and w's)

I had some problems though with it as it kept silently performing some of the parts of the instructions without letting you know that you've completed a stage. Kept repeating stages which can't have done it any good because it corrupted my HDD.

Was able to recover two thirds of my data using winhiip though, but would have rather not lost it in the first place. BUt hey, it works, and it was free...

But is there a way to make ps2linux rhino flavour coexist on the same HDD as HDLoader?

Not sure, the tutorial I attached before is the only one that I know of. I assume it could work if the tut. was followed and providing that BR has the necessary formatting tools in theory. But like I said before, I am a complete noob at linux.

I get the "cannot load modules" error when I want to install linux BR on my ps2. I think it's due to the existence of a HDL File System on the hdd but I'm not sure... What should I do? thx
