Sorry if I'm being a dumbass on this or if I'm missing the obvious, but can the LiveDVD be patched for use with ESR or would I require a modchip?
Thanks in advance

@goth1k
There is no need for either ESR patching or modchip. The format is like a video DVD, and since the PS2 recognizes burnt video DVDs, there is no need for extra measures for the files to be available to kernelloader version 2.1 and the PS2-Linux kernel version 4 since Mega Man added this feature.but can the LiveDVD be patched for use with ESR or would I require a modchip?
EDIT - dlanor explained how ESR works and what I wrote above does not appear correct. Sorry for the misinformation, the liveDVD is new to me too!

@xtc-king
What is your PS2 version? I think some version 10 FAT might be accidentally seen as a Slim which would cause hangs. Also, a long shot, what are your ULaunchELF settings for Disc Control and Reset IOP?
I finally tried this on both my slim v12 and FAT v7 with a Network adapter, and HDL formatted HDD attached.
I burnt the Live DVD on a Verbatim DVD+R booktyped to DVD-ROM.
I tested on NTSC consoles, both connected to a Multiformat SD TV via s-video via a s-video switch box.
The v12 has problems with pressed DVD9 games, so the laser is not 100%.
I believe I got a problem that is not laser based though. I get stuck at an error that says "failed to load module eromdrvloader.irx" (see pic below)
On my v7 with an almost dead laser it did load all the modules, but give the following multicolored screen, after booting.
I tested with both a USB mouse and Keyboard, and with only a controller.
Anyone know what I may be doing wrong, or is this just a laser issue?
@urbigbro
For the v12 it is possible that you have an existing and incorrect mc0:\kloader\config.txt file, which even booting from the livedvd is accessed on boot. Check to see if this file exists, and if it does, remove or move it. See this post - http://forums.ps2dev.org/viewtopic.php?p=86913#86913
For the v7 - lots of pretty colors there. Does it go through the text portion of the Linux boot and this is what you get with X-Windows? If so, I've found it useful to use <CTRL><ALT><Backspace> to exit X-Windows to the Linux text mode (crtmode) to troubleshoot or restart X-Windows with new settings. See the file /usr/local/bin/win3 if this is the case. If it isn't the case, try the same clearing of the config.txt file.
@ALL
It is important to note that the version 1 Live DVD ISO is FIXED to PAL for X-Windows. Every display that does not support PAL will have problems with this version of the Live DVD. You can get around it temporarily by exiting X-Windows with the above key sequence, then "cp /usr/local/bin/win3 $HOME", editing the file with "vi $HOME/win3" to replace "PAL" with "$XMODE", then vi $HOME/.bash_profile last line from ". win3" to ". $HOME/win3". You can run the script to test with ". $HOME/win3" from the text mode bash shell.
Thanks for the info! I'll look for that file, and also try the PS2 on a TV that has component input and PAL support.
Ok, I didn't have that file or directory, on my MC, and I hooked up my v7 to a TV with PAL support. Same result.
<CTRL><ALT><Backspace> did not work, no keyboard commands did in the multicolored screen.
The keyboard did work in the loader menu and uLE.
I really think this is just that my lasers are weak, since both consoles aren't working.
When I can get access to consoles with strong lasers I'll try it again.
BTW- Is there a version of PS2 linux complied to run from MASS, on a Fat PS2. I know the slims, are troublesome with USB. I can install linux on, my Fat via the HDD, but I don't want to format a HDD just for Linux, or deal with putting games and Linux on the same HDD.
Thanks again for the help.
The v7 doesn't load the configuration from the DVD. The default configuration starts a simple PS2 kernel with a demo. The demo paints these colors. There is no Linux started. My experience is that DVD-R is working better than DVD+R.
The v12 has the old eromdrvloader.irx problem. DVD can't be accessed if this module can't be loaded. I thought that I fixed it. I assume that the v12 has several ROM1:EROMDRV* like later slim consoles. I need your ROM version. Can you tell me your region (A, C, E = Europe, J = Japan, M, O = Australia, R, U)? Can you dump your NVM? Can someone else with v12 and differnet region dump the NVM?
The Live DVD is based on the USB version by deba5er. This was already discussed in the other Blackrhino threads. The easiest way is as follows (file system is read only):
1. Copy the file DISC.BIN from the DVD to an USB memory stick (root directory, Windows fat16 and fat32 is working).
2. Copy the file CONFIG.TXT from DVD to mc0:/kloader/config.txt
3. Copy INITRD.GZ and VMLINUX.GZ from DVD to the USB memory stick (any directory)
3. Start kloader.elf
4. Stop auto boot by game pad or USB keyboard.
5. Select kernel from USB memory stick (VMLINUX.GZ)
6. Select initrd from USB memory stick (INITRD.GZ)
8. Add kernel parameter: "cdrom=/dev/sda1" or "cdrom=/dev/sda" if there is no partition table
9. Save configuration
10. Start Linux
You still have the NTSC problem (PAL is hard wired) and everything changed after boot is lost on reboot. This runs the Live DVD from USB memory stick.
Thanks for the help!
I did as you suggested and this is the next error I got.
"failed to load module host:eromdrvloader.irx (rv= -201)."
Do I need the PS2 hooked up to my network? Host is a network protocol right?
NTSC/U v12
From uLE's debug info feature:
ROMVER= 0200AC20040614
Not sure how to make a NVM dump, or what that even is. I'll search around PS2 dev, but if you respond before I figure it out, please link me to the files I need to do so, and some simple instructions.
Thanks again for doing this custom Linux for us curious, yet Linux unfamiliar folks.
PS: This v12 PS2 is my roommates whom will move out any day now and I will not have access to after that. I only own Fats with dead or dying lasers.

Amazing job, clearly in it's early state.
What about to port OWB as the main browser instead of Dillo and/or TMSNC as the main MSN client?
Audacious instead of XMMS as music player, along the audtty (ncurses front-end to Audacious)?
I'd like also a kind of masquerade boot session with an ordered step by step, coloured OK/FAIL (like gentoo) visualization, maybe using frambuffer to put in background some brand new 'ps2linux' logo or something ;-)
Obviously, it would be really necessary minimize further the active services at boot, mantaining everything under 1,4 Gb (MiniDVD size)
I'd like as well, for the next release (?) these kind of cool lightweight linux apps/games (just to show to friends something nice.. here there are just some suggestions):
- BB demo (an incredible demo that use ASCII art )
- asciijump (an ascii art game)
- BSD games (...)
- lynx or links (the well know, to linux folks, text browsers)
- Ltris and Lbreakout2 (very nice tetris and breakout clones)
- Quadra (yet another tetris clone, with some interesting features, netplay..) and vitetris (amusing terminal-based tetris)
- XWellTris (2,5D Tetris like - I just like so much tetris, I know!)
- Super Star Trek Game ;-)
- Midnight Commander (..?)
- Pushover (the remake!)
- Frozen Bubble (if you are crazy enough to play with your girlfriend through a Playstation 2 linux..)
- Freetumble (a nice puzzle game)
- MySudoku (...)
- Tornado (C64 game clone, ascii art)
- OldSchoolGravityGame (a nice game with vector graphics)
- ASCIIpOrtal (ASCII version of Valve's Portal)
- Powermanga (arcade 2D shoot-em-up)
- Teeworlds (multi-player shooter)
- Cavez of phear (boulder dash like game, ascii art)
- TPP (Nico Golde's powerpoint of the poor)
- Troubles of middle earth (fantasy adventure game, ASCII art)
- Joystick tester (as above, use GTK)
- Ncurses Nibbles (remake of the classic)
- Pang zero (a nice super pang clone)
- tcl/tk games (Hearts, Spider, Hangman, Yahtzee, Solitaire)
- XorCurses (puzzle game that use Ncurses)
- Block Rage (A falling-blocks game)
- typespeed (damn good and usefull)
bye!
