Hello Everyone! Today is a very special day. I talked to archicharmer and he said to me that this is time for it.
Actually archicharmer due to its life obligations has left us for quite some time and it is really disappointment to me and I am sure for majority of others because he understands a lot in Linux, and if not his wish to explore the world of Linux for PS2—probably nothing of it could have happened.
I want to believe that one day archicharmer will appear again on PSX-Scene and his appearance will be so bright as his work.
The last thing that archicharmer told me about his work was this:--”Use it, Improve it and Pass it on to others”...
So everyone is Welcome to Contribute to,Develop it, Use and Pass On to others archicharmers project.
Does not matter who you are—the usual user, developer—you are welcome to join the party.
Since the very beginning fat ps2 users had some luck –if they could have wish to run Linux on their ps2—they could do it very simply.
To the contrary –users of ps2 slim had only problems if they would decide to do the same thing.
But as was sang in one song--”Things will never be the same again”---so here on ps2 Linux scene things will never be the same again.
Linux Tool Kit----”Linux Distribution itself”--has GPL License. So it unties our hands to do with it everything we want.
Time has passed and till the moment—everyone thought that if you want to run Linux Tool Kit---you can do it only on Fat PS2. But such conclusion as it appears now was completely wrong in its nature.
I do not know how spent their time during all those years in their basements hackers involved in ps2 scene---but I know for sure how archicharmer spent some short time during his project development for his slim PS2.
He was concentrated on Linux Tool Kit. Actually I also helped him to some extent, but the major work was done by him.

And now I am ready to present you with Linux Tool Kit as LOOP file to run it through SMB.
The method to run it is based on Deba5er s method.
So it means that you have at first to set up SMB accordingly to Deba5er s method,
for that go to start [PS2] and do the best you can in order to do that.
Then replace original Deba5er Linux_loop with one “Created by archicharmer” and taken from here:

MEGAUPLOAD - The leading online storage and file delivery service

As Linux Kernel use--------vmlinux_fat_and_slim_v4.gz--------which can be downloaded here:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/kern...4.17%20Kernel/

As Initial Ram Disc use--------initrd.usb2.smb.gz--------which you can get from here:
    http://www.ps2.nuclearfall.com/

You will need to use compatible keyboard with Linux Tool Kit in order to use it.
During loading press “i” and for the first question about network answer “n” .
For the rest of questions press “Enter”.
If you will have an error “segmentation fault”---reload the Linux and try one more time.

    Login: root
    Password: filter

if you want to see “GNOME”--press startx . You will need usb-mouse.

Of course it needs to be improved to further become stable 100%, but as a concept to be achieved by Linux Enthusiast during such a short period of time –is amazing.

Swap file is used the same from Deba5er.
It has to be mounted manually. To do that you need when already loaded Linux Tool Kit type this:
    losetup /path to/swap
swapon loop? Where ? --number of loop where just now was mounted swap

How was created Linux Tool Kit LOOP file?

From newly installation of Linux Tool Kit on Fat PS2 –was created HDD-image with help of Acronis.
Then again with help of acronis the image was recorded to USB-HDD. In Linux the “Image” was mounted and compressed with tar .
Then was mounted loop from Deba5er---everything was deleted from it.
Image of PS2 Linux Tool Kit was uncompressed to empty Deba5er loop.
Here is how to install rpm packets : rpm -i /path to/packet.rpm

Well guys I know that Linux Tool Kit trough SMB needs to be improved –but at least we have something now---FAT and SLIM can now run Linux Tool Kit.
    Enjoy.

    Hi SkyNet,

I have not had time to try any of this yet, but your instructions together with the linked page of Deba5er seem fairly complete, except for one omission. In your text you refer to the kernel we need to use, in the passage below:

Quote Originally Posted by SkyNet View Post

The initrd stuff is no problem, as that was linked on Deba5er's page, but the kernel was not.

I assume that the correct kernel file can be found elsewhere in this PS2 Linux subforum, but it really would be much better if this post had that kernel as a direct attachment, or at least a download link to wherever it's currently posted. This way everything of importance can be found through this one post and its links, without having to do any extra searching.

    Best regards: dlanor

Well thank you dlanor that you noticed it.
I tried to attach to this post vmlinux_fat_and_slim_v4.gz but since last servers update of PSX-Scene I sometimes cant attach files. If to upload them from internet address then it can work. I tried to uload it from kloader page and no luck, so you have to download it directly from Megamens page.
Here is the link where it is possible to download it:
    Kernelloader - Browse /Linux 2.4/Linux 2.4.17 Kernel at SourceForge.net

Actually why it is happening, is because Deba5er is responsible for SMB release of PS2 Linux and has some files to download at his own web-page which is located here:
    start [PS2],
but Megaman is responsible for Kloader itself and uploads his own files to this place:
Kernelloader | Download Kernelloader software for free at SourceForge.net.
I already told in one thread here somewhere that "Why it cant be uploaded to one place with necessary instructions--so people wont be confused"?
But looks that noone probably reads my posts or something.
Anyway thanks that you found it.
This way my instruction will be more complete and closer to the end user.

It's not just you. I just noticed that I can't do it either, and there was a weird error when I tried it. I got the initial attachement popup window as usual, but after selecting a file and clicking the upload button, I suddenly got a normal forum displayed in that tiny popup window, instead of the expected updated attachment popup which should have shown the added attachment.

I suspect a bad scripting error here, and I'm going to report it in a moderator area.

Good. I downloaded it now to verify that all works well on the sourceforge server, which it does.

The important thing is just that all components are available, though it is irritating that we can't use attachments normally now, as it prevents easy addition of that download to the first post.

But perhaps you should edit the first post anyway, adding a note containing the above URL and stating that the needed kernel can be downloaded there. Then all needed links can be found through the first post.

    Best regards: dlanor

hello, a few days that I'm testing the method Deba5er, and works well, then I was testing this Linux Tool Kit, the share of ps2linux_loop runs fine
but then I get the error message:
    Checking root filesystem
    fsck: fsck.ext3: not found
fsck: error 2 while executing fsck.ext3 for /dev/loop0

after a few more errors with the system check and fsck.ext3 so stop.

I do not know what can be, my ps2 is slim v14 scph75001.

    • was also wondering if it worth using mplayer or what applications it worth using Linux on the PS2?

    • In the loop Deba5er I tried to install mplayer but it arrives at a certain point it crashes. And I'm using 256MB of swap, and had this problem with installing the system works well, clear for SMB.

    thanks in advance.

mrcordas can you more depict the whole process?
Actually what interests me is this:
    1. How do you run your SMB--through cross-over cable or through modem?
2.Was it difficult for you to set up SMB from Deba5er?
3.When you run SMB with loop from Deaba5er do you get any errors and does it run smoothly?
4.How did you edit your files ---hosts--init_smb--resolv--intface--?
5.Do you have compatible keyboard with Linux Tool Kit--I mean does Linux Tool Kit respond when you press buttons on your keyboard?
6.When you tried to run Linux Tool Kit through SMB--did you get to the Desktop Itself?
7.Also have you tried to run any software from Linux Tool Kit when Linux Tool Kit was already downloaded?
    8.Have you mounted manually SWAP?
9.What are your impressions from Linux Tool Kit?
10.Can you describe the whole process of loading Linux Tool Kit from start to the Desktop ? Like all your actions--what did you do?

I think that if you will describe the whole process more thoroughly --the more people will understand you--and they will know how to help you.

Also would be very nice if Deba5er and Megaman would try to run Linux Tool Kit through SMB and to give feedback like how it was in general.

People feel free to try Linux Tool Kit.
As a community we need to participate more--this way we will know more details and the whole process will be more advanced and developed.

    Please give your feedback.

Wow, this is the first time I really want to mess again with PS2-Linux, since deba5er's 0.8-version!
I simply have to do it! I already announced installing PS2-Linux to my NAS and start it from there, but hopefully this 'toolkit' will make it even easier.

I'll do an install later, but I still have to do some other stuff to the NAS.

Well I am glad for you TnA.
Would be nice to hear the feedback from you like how did it run and all the other info.
I think that NAS is a lot better than SMB---you are independent from PC.
And also in terms of speed.
The only problem I think is that probably it is more difficult to configure NAS ?

Nope, the standard-stuff, like configuring shares, users, rights and passwords is super-easy.
Just to extend it (other programms), you should be able to handle telnet and SSH.

Btw.: The funny thing about this NAS,... I actually can extend it to be like a PC with desktop and all that + I can directly connect periferals through USB and/or a hub.

TnA was it difficult for you to edit files from Deba5er--i mean those ones--hosts--init_smb--resolv--intface ?
Like is there anywhere instruction like which file is responsible for what?

I , for example, tried to install linux to smb on my PC---different methods used, tried to use ethernet switch, connected through my modem, input different ip--no luck.
When I saw in my properties of ethernet adapter---it showed that information is transmitted, but ps2 linux kernel showed only white moving words on black screen, but no Linux Desktop--like I seen it on PS2 Linux LiveDVD.
If there could be written instruction for smb installation like how properly to input IP to each file(acordingly to different situation---cross over ethernet cable--ethernet switch---modem with wi-fi),
and like each of those files -----hosts--init_smb--resolv--intface-------- what they are responsible for?

I think if such instruction could be written----then it could be much more easier for the average ps2 user to install linux to smb share.
