The original is a DVD5 disc, so use a standard single layer DVD-R disc, preferably of high quality.

So I've made my english copy and I'm having a few problems with it. Every once in a while the game will lag and the loading screens between areas will take much longer than usual. The disc isn't scratched at all, it's a 16x 4.7 GB memorex disc and I used write speed 2.4.

Any suggestions as to what I could do to fix this?

Memorex DVDs are crap, its killing your PS2 laser.

I recommend get Verbatim AZO DVD-R and burning at 4 or 8 speed.

^ just buy sony's with the accucore or some tiayo yuden's
    verbatims are just expensive

and it really doesn't matter what speed you burn at that was back in the day with the older burner's that had to be burnt slow,
    dont belive me google it.

oh yeah more then likely anything bargain bin worthy is usually bad for your laser this is due to low reflectivity in the discs and the ps2's laser has to strain to read it.

My PS2 does make a lot more noise than usual when playing this...

So any disc that's not dark is good?

Nope, that's also a wrong assumption.

Try High-Quality-Media, such as Verbatim which will reflect almost golden after burning.
