Receiving black screen on patched games

Hey everyone,

I bought a memory card with FreeMcBoot 1.8 and all the apps loaded onto it from a local supplier but I am having issues.

I have a 7 series PAL slim PS2 and FreeMcBoot comes up fine but when I insert a patched disc it just takes me to a black screen with nothing else.

I used ImgBurn to backup my original DVD game (Ys: The Ark of Napishtim) and then patched with the ESR patcher 0.24a.

I then check inside the image in windows and it displays VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS instead of the normal layout.

I burnt this image back with ImgBurn and it displays the directory tree on the burnt disc as it was originally (ie. no VIDEO_TS and no AUDIO_TS) - not sure if this is correct or not.

Anyway it just gives me a black screen and I tried this with another original DVD also and nothing.

When I remove the memory card all together and just try to load the disc from the PS2 browser it does the SAME THING! No "Please insert a disc" or DVD video mode just a black screen.... What am I doing wrong?????

I don't know what version of ESR is on the card since I did not load it myself - how can I check this?

Well,... I hoped you didn´t paid too much (~price of the MC itself), since FMCB is free.

I have a 7 series PAL slim PS2 and FreeMcBoot comes up fine but when I insert a patched disc it just takes me to a black screen with nothing else.

One of both naturally is wrong.
It only could be a Slim-PS2 (SCPH 70xxx-90xxx), OR a V7 (SCPH-39xxx --> FAT PS2).

Seems, you´ve used a wrong programm to create your ISO, or you re-builded it in the wrong way.
...or you got the Image from the Internet and didn´t read it on your own,...

Windows shows the ISO-Filesystem, when a disc contains both filesystems.
Thus, it will never show the VIDEO_TS-Folders normally, because the ISO-Filesystem isn´t patched, but only the UDF one.

Anyway it just gives me a black screen and I tried this with another original DVD also and nothing.

There are three possibilities.

1. The game(s) is(/are) not compatible to ESR.
2. The burned result is at fault (be it because of worse media-quality, bad burner, bad burner-settings, BAD ISO, or whatever...).
3. The PS2 is at fault, so for example simply can´t read it.

I strongly recommend, that you re-read the ISO from your game with a programm, it is reported to work.

You´ve mentioned IMGBurn, that you say you used for making a backup of your original DVD.
Well,... IMG-Burn correctly reads both, the ISO- and the UDF-FS and also Memento/ESR-Patcher is able to patch ISOs made with this programm correctly, so my assumption is (even thought you´ve mentioned something different), that you in fact did load a corrupted ISO (or at least one, which didn´t follow the PS2-DVD-Standard).

I don't know what version of ESR is on the card since I did not load it myself - how can I check this?

It´s hard to differ between the normal 3 ESR-Versions, just by looking at the size thought, but you will see the difference, between ESR-GUI and one of those 3 Mini-ESRs.


Btw.: It might be simply a fault at your end, or maybe I´m simply wrong.
I´m not saying you necessarily did download the game, but it is one of the possibilities.

2. The model exactly is SCPH-79002 PAL version

3. Sorry I was slightly incorrect - it is actually Winrar which opens the ISO when I click on it and it shows VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS after patching but before patching it shows the normal directory tree with a bunch of files in it.

4. I have used ISOBuster to check the image before patching and it displays ISO and UDF filesystem. They appear almost identical in content.

After patching it shows ISO as it was and UDF is now DVDVIDEO. I assume this means the patch applied correctly?

5. I cannot see ESR on the main screen of my FMB my options are:

Browser
System Configuration
ULaunchELF
Launch Disc
Reload Configuration
FreeMcBoot Configurator

6. I insert the disc at this FMB menu and it immediately goes to load it. After this the screen goes blank and does absolutely nothing and a few seconds later it seems to fade into total black and that is as far as I get.

The disc is 100% original not downloaded I can take a photo if you like.

Really starting to get frustrated here.

So, that is a V16 (thought).

Yes, that is a difference and would explain some things, such as showing the UDF-FS.

That only means, it isn´t linked to the OSD.
Take a look at the FMCB-Tutorials (now with fresh design) at,...

...and take a look with the configurator at "ESR-Path" and with uLE to the specified locations (if the ELF is present).

Hm,... Did you see any message on screen, like "This DVD couldn´t be played due to regional conflicts.", or something.

Thank you so much you were SPOT ON!

The idiots did not setup the ESR path properly and it was pointing to a non existent file!!! I changed this to point to the ESR.elf file and it worked like a charm!! Thanks so much for your very speedy help.. it's 3:30am here where I am now and I was tearing my hair out haha. Thanks again.

Yeah would've been nice of them to test it for me considering I paid them for it. Anyway it's working perfect now and I'm enjoying it immensely. (If only PS2 was region free like PS3 I wouldn't even need this)

Anyway if anyone has this problem where it just takes you to a black screen without seeing any ESR logo or colours or anything then your paths are probably not set properly.

If you see ESR logo that means it's something else.
