I installed ESR a few days ago and made copies of all my games, most of which work perfectly fine. However, my copies of Odin Sphere and Grim Grimoire both have the same bizarre error: They get to the "Press Start" screen, and then I'm stuck there; pressing start doesn't do anything. My controllers work fine on other games, my other backups work fine, I'm working from some form of Verbatim DVD-R, Odin Sphere is confirmed as working with ESR, what am I doing wrong?

So I went into another room and tried the same game disc in an SCPH-77004 which boots uLE from MC through FMCB. But for variety in the testing I went into the FMCB menu by manual command and did the launch by selecting the disc in the Sony browser (as modified by FMCB). And as ESR booted up the disc I then got exactly the same results as in the previous test, meaning that everything worked perfectly.
I'm not sure what is going wrong at your end, but the game itself is definitely compatible with ESR here. So the cause for its failing at your end must lie in some difference between what we use and/or how we use it.
One possible difference is that we may not have the same game version (mine is stated above), and another is that we may not have ripped and prepared the ISO from the original disc in the same way. Mine was ripped from the original disc using "DVD Decrypter", and was then ESR-patched using the "ESR Disc Patcher v0.24a" by ffgriever (ESR's creator).
And of course, there is also the possibility that differing disc quality may affect our results.
While you did say that you too use Verbatim, you did not mention which variation of disc it is.
Some of the older Verbatim media were not at all as reliable as the current AZO DVD-R, and some variations of DVD+R and all RW variations are definitely unsuitable for PS2 use.
I guess that's as far as I can go in speculating on why it fails for you, but hopefully some of this can give you a clue to achieving better results.

I've seen this kind of thing with OPL. I don't know if its the same in your case but do you use PS1 pads. I've been using some I have and noticed most games worked fine. However, one case like super monkey ball deluxe didn't (could press start or anything). If you have some other controllers try those as well. I'm not sure if its third party issue or PS1 pad incompatible. As soon as found one that worked I didn't use the others.
