OMG, I never expected ESR to do this

Let's begin with my configuration. I have a 7700x ps2 slim + FMCB + 4 GB USB stick.

Ok, so what I've been doing since getting FMCB is burning unpatched ISOs onto DVD and use FMCB + SwapMagic elf or Cogswap elf to get my backups running. Although this is a viable, as well as the cheapest, solution to run backups. I noticed backups do not load successfully 100% of the time. Also, my PS2 gets picky with the DVDs when loading backups this way. I've tried Verbitam 8x DVD+R, TDK 16x DVD-R, and RiData 8x DVD+R; only Verbitam could read disc without PS2 making lots of noise, RiData was ok, and TDK was plain disaster.
Yesterday, I burned a pathed Jap Front Mission 5 onto TDK DVD as my last attempt with this brand. And...bam.....ESR booted it ...... they way I got it to boot was first setting R1 button to "ESR something DVD off.elf" in FMCB config. Then put in the game, power up ps2, holding R1 button and that's it! I've burned the pathed FM5 onto Verbitam DVD for comparison and my PS2 only made a lil bit more noise reading the TDK one. Video playback from TDK disc was smooth, loading took a bit longer than Verbitam disc occasionally but that's okay with me. Whoo hoo! No more paying extra for $$$ DVD-/+Rs!!!!

Don't underestimate the power of ESR! ;)

ESR is a truly awesome piece of application.

I used to think my PS2 doesn't read TDK disc is because of the weak laser, an hardware issue. The reviews on TDK DVDs for PS2 backups is pretty diverse, but ESR solved my problem. Just wondering, how is ESR capable of doing that??????

I think, it is more because the mechacon detects it as DVD-Video-Disc, instead of PS2DVD.
I assume, it starts because it doesn't validate, if it is an original (because Video-DVDs are accepted without this "checks").

Please do not think, that is a "free-ticket" for worse burned discs, or bad media.

DVD-R's read best in a PS2 as that what's ps2 was originally designed to do DVD+R was support was added in v9 I believe. There seems to be some kind compatibly issues with the slimline ps2 lasers though various models differ significantly also on the original FAT PS2's they had problems reading multi-disc ps1 games such as MGS:Special Missions which was later fixed on later models.
The ps2 also has a hard time reading the blue ps2 cd's you can hear it struggling to read them which wears out the laser to combat this issue I re-burn all my ps2 cdrom games onto DVD-R by making an ISO of the original disc with IMGBurn, extract it with CDmage then patch the required files with DVDscan and overwrite the original files into the iso with CDmage then burn it to a DVD-R with IMGBurn.
In the latest versions of ESR you don't need to patch the files with DVDscan because it has cd/dvd spoofing.
Have you tried esr patching the other types of recordable media you already used?

What did you mean by other types of recordable media? I've test ESR using Verbitam 8x DVD+R and TDK 16x DVD-R only. I suppose RiData disc will work also since I haven't had a problem with it before adopting ESR

Im more curious about ESR's effect on the PS2 laser or system. Yes it works great, and has an awesome succes rate, but I have noticed that now some normal DVD videos refuse to play and some original ps2 games have strange video effects when booting.

Just wondering what the long term effects of using esr could be. seeing that those negetive effects are likely not irreversable.

I think you are misinterpreting what you see, mistakenly thinking that ESR is responsible.

It is more likely that this has to do with the incomplete initialization of the console boot state as implemented by FMCB. Recent experiments started by jimmikaelkael and performed by many other users have proved that some other unwanted effects, including video colour tints etc, were due to this incomplete initialization, so quite likely the same is true of the effects you've noted. The most recent experiments also show that jimmi has the situation well in hand, so that he can fix those problems in the next FMCB version.

An what speeds did you burn that? I find 4X is the most reliable to perform a quality burn.

I burn all mine on Memorex DVD+R's no problems at 8x... Yes I know I'm cheap... But they work fine...
