So I have a strange problem that I can't seem to figure out at all. I've previously backed up more than a few of my games and they work no problem (I used Memorex DVDs if it matters). I got some more DVDs (Verbatim and Memorex) last week and have tried backing up more of my games but only a small few worked. The odd thing here is that I tried a few of them on a friends fat ps2 and they worked just fine. I have NO idea what's going wrong here since I've done nothing differently than I did before and the games I burned previously work just fine. Any ideas?

I'm using ESR 9b and ESR disc patcher GUI v0.24a. The only thing that I can think of that's changed is that I updated ULE but I don't see how that would matter.

Most older FAT PS2s can't read cheap discs (Memorex is a very good example of a brand that makes low-quality discs) and DVD+R discs.

Another possibility is that that set of Verbatim discs you've got isn't manufactured by Taiyo... but some cheaper company like CMC.

Stick to only Verbatim (Taiyo) DVD-R discs if your PS2 is one of those PS2s with the older KHS-400 lasers.

A really close situation to what you've experienced: My 39001 PS2 (Before I swapped it for my 39006) couldn't read any of the discs my 39006 can read (Except for those Verbatim discs).

Well all the DVDs are -r and it's that fat ps2 that can read them. I'm going to try cleaning the laser tonight. Anyone have suggestions on what I should use to clean it? I usually just use a q-tip.

I think my problem may be related to the disc manufacturer as I tried some Memorex DVDs from a 10 pack and they work perfectly fine. I'm going to scour the forums again to hopefully re-find the topic with ways to identify the manufacturer before buying. Now I'm just bummed I wasted $30.

WTH... Am I going nuts, or are you, or maybe both of us...

Every single "Verbatim AZO 16x DVD-R" disc that I ever bought (many hundreds) has had the disc ID "MCC 03RG20" meaning that it is made by Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation...

I know that Taiyo Yuden also has a very good reputation for top quality, but I never associated them with Verbatim.

As for Verbatim discs of low quality, I think those horror stories (while probably true as far as they go) all occurred quite some time ago. They probably learned their lesson well back then, and will avoid trying to cut corners that way ever again, as I'm sure it hurt their long-term sales for a long while.

Getting back to the problem of juggalomars, it is quite likely that long term mixed use of those low quality Memorex discs has forced the laser to use abnormal intensities too much, causing permanent damage. The fact that he also may have used some top-quality discs does not in any way compensate for the damage done by the low-quality ones.

The only way to truly save the laser is to use 100% high quality discs.
Nothing else will do it. And for damage already done there is no cure at all.
The only thing that can be done to fix the problem of an overstrained laser is to replace it.

    Best regards: dlanor

    Shocking!

Fortunately I have never suffered the same fate myself, as I would definitely stop buying from any supplier delivering such crap. And I am even more shocked to learn that Verbatim has NOT learned the obvious lesson of not dealing in crap if they want to be taken seriously. (Unless that was an old shipment that has spent some years in warehouses.)

If I ever do get similar crap here I will notice it instantly (ID is always shown in ImgBurn), and in such a case I will cut that supplier off from future orders forever. And if Verbatim really has sunk this low again, then I will obviously abandon their brand as well. But I'll need more verification of that than just one instance, possibly from an old shipment.

Well the store had 2 kinds of Verbatim DVD-Rs and I was unsure which to get so I got the one that was $2 cheaper. They had these (http://www.frys.com/product/5861913?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG) and another 100 pack that had a lighter packaging that I can't find on the site. It just really sucks that you need to open the package and to find out of the discs are any good. Do you happen to know if Sony or TDK DVDs are any good?
