Ok mates, I was just about to open a thread like this, so I'm going to enjoy this one.
I've been testing ESR GUI test2 form this link http://psx-scene.com/forums/433755-post707.html (ESR - public beta) for a while and during these tests accidentally I find a way to boot unpatched back-ups in my system. It sounds great, doesn't it? But I don't know if it is a side-effect of the old crappy Magic modchip that is installed in my PS2 or an unsual welcome feature of ESR GUI. This modchip is so bad that it needs more than 6 or 10 attempts to boot a back-up (The PS2 must be turned on with the back-up inside to boot), even so sometimes the back-up won't boot as well... You can't imagine my joy when I found FMCB + ESR and the patched back-ups botted at the first try
. And now I'm much happier cause FMCB + ESR GUI is booting unpatched back-ups too. I see no reason to open my console and uninstall the modchip to verify if the unpatched back-ups are booting due it. So I ask to anyone with an unmodded PS2 + FMCB + ESR GUI to test the my procedure cause it will cause no harm. So first things first, my console specification:
-Fat PS2 model SCPH 30000 (jap console).
-NA + HDD 160GB
-Crappy Magic modchip
-Memory Card with FMCB 1.7 + ESR GUI
The procedure is very simple:
-Turn on the PS2 with EJECT buttom (do not use power buttom). The tray will open, let it so.
-Run ESR_GUI_test2.elf from anywhere: OSD menu, uLaunch -> mcard, uLaunch -> HDD, DMS HDD Explorer.
-The ESR GUI screen will pop up. Look at the status bar at the bottom of the screen. The status is : TRAY/COVER OPENED...
-Place an unpatched back-up on the tray and press EJECT to close it. The status bar will change to DETECTING... . If everything goes right, it will change to PS2DVD IN DRIVE...
Otherwise it will show : INVALID MEDIA IN DRIVE. If I get PS2DVD IN DRIVE and afterwards I eject the tray and close it again, I will get INVALID MEDIA IN DRIVE. So I have to get the right status at the first shot. Sometimes status stucks at DETECTING..., while at it, I can open and close the tray again to get another reading of the media and I still can get the right status. But if I get after detection the INVALID MEDIA IN DRIVE status, I have to repeat the procedure again.
-If everything is all right, now choose LAUNCH CDVD and enjoy.
I've tested several games (CD/DVD) and many ways to boot them and apps. Some ones run better with Disable ESR after first IOP Reset. I also tried :
-Launch APP -> uLaunch -> cdfs:/ -> SLXX_XXX.XX
-Launch APP + Disable ESR after first IOP Reset -> uLaunch -> HDloader : install game -> run ok!
-Use your imagination.
With this procedure when I place a patched back-up at the first shot I also get PS2DVD IN DRIVE. But if I open the tray and close it again I will get PS2DVDV IN DRIVE, what is the normal status of this kind of media.
Well that's it. I hope somebody else can test it as well and take my doubts away.
Thanks for the attention.

@Bon Scott:
I'm quite sure that the effect you report of being able to boot unpatched backups is due to your mod-chip, which tricks the mechacon into 'seeing' those discs as valid pressed PS2 DVD discs.
As you mentioned yourself, your chip already had the ability to boot such backups, though it was unreliable in doing so. Thus the main improvement for you in using the ESR GUI to boot those discs is that you get a visual feedback on how well the chip has succeeded in 'faking' the pressed DVD recognition for the mechacon, which allows you to retry until this 'faking' has succeeded.
This is clearly a good thing for you, and others with similar mod-chips, but it is not something that can be used on an unmodded console, where the mechacon will always refuse access to an unpatched burned disc (unless using swap methods).
Best regards: dlanor

I think that an "on-the-fly" patching procedure of unpatched DVDs with an unmodded PS2 is technically impossible, at this point. There's now way to circumvent the Disc check without a modchip, a ESR patched DVD or the swap-trick-stuff. But never say never again

Thanks a lot dlanor and Der Hutmacher for your answers!
That's it so, ESR GUI brought more stability and power to the old Magic modchip installed in my PS2. Luck to me then!
Once again thanks to ffgriver and cia for creating ESR, I love this program!
