The ISO that I have for Kingdom Hearts 1 will not patch with the ESR disk patcher 0.2.4. It says cannot open image! or something similar to that, so I was forced to burn it unpatched.

This obviously does not work with ESR because it is not patched for use with ESR. I have been able to boot the game with a certain swap method, but it's tedious as hell and I'd rather just be able to directly boot it or have to do less swapping.

The method that I have to use to play it is first, I put in an ESR patched game and load uLE at the FMCB startup screen. I enable the disk_control in settings to stop the disk from spinning (my sensors are blocked; slim PS2) and remove it. At the top of uLE it says ESR DVD. I then put in Kingdom Hearts and turn disk_control off, and start the game by going to MISC on the memcard and pressing PS2Disk.

All that just to boot a game. Is there an easier way? Or is there a way to fix the problem with patching the ISO?

Thanks for any and all help.

    Quick and easy,

I have this game backed up, ESR patched and it works fine..

It sounds like you DO NOT have an ORIGINAL RIPPED FROM DISK .ISO.
    (NOT DOWNLOAD)

Rip the game from an original disk, patch it, and burn it..

Not much else to really say.

Just to be sure...are you sure that no other program is using the image(like daemon tools or something else)when you try to patch it?

No, it is from the original disk. It just refuses to patch with the ESR patcher.

Edit: When I backup my games, I don't rip it myself. I get the ISO from the internet.
Edit 2: I had to do this the other day for a different game (Tales of Legendia) since it was marred by the warfare of gamestop's used games section and had freezing problems. I had bought it a few years ago and never finished playing it, so I decided to recently. It was freezing at parts near the end of the game, so I backed it up by downloading an ISO and finished the game that night.

Did you check if the ISO file has "Read only" checked in its properties? If so, you must uncheck it, or maybe the image file is not an ISO, maybe it is an MDF file (Alcohol 120%).

Just to point something out here: that method you described for playing the game worked for you? Can this be confirmed?

The method did work, yes. Also, I think you may have been right about the read-only thing. I ripped the ISO from the DVD that I burned (the one that was not patched) and the ripped ISO patched successfully. It could have been read only..wow I need to learn to check for these things sooner haha

Thanks for the help, and thanks DJ for the ps2 :P

To me this means that the ISO file may be invalid, so that the patcher can not access the UDF filesystem the ISO file should contain. Some programs rip only the ISO9660 filesystem of a disc, and with an emulator or some modchips a disc burned from that rip might work. But ESR requires the UDF filesystem, as it relies on similarity to a DVD-Video disc (which always has UDF) to make the CDVD mechacon of the PS2 allow access to the burned disc.

    Edit:
Evidently the UDF filesystem was present, as a re-rip made it work.
But that is of little importance compared to the other issue (below).

Edit: When I backup my games, I don't rip it myself. I get the ISO from the internet.
That is your main problem and puts an end to all possibility of getting help to deal with those ISOs in this forum. Helping anyone use commercial game ISOs obtained in such a way is not permitted in these forums.

We will help you as much as you may need in learning how to make your own legal backup ISOs from the original discs. But at this point that is also the ONLY thing we are prepared to help you with that relates to game ISO files.

Once you are working with legal ISO files, or at least trying to make them, we can talk again, but as long as you're working with the downloaded game ISOs, you should not discuss it here again. (Doing so can lead to banning.)

    Best regards: dlanor

    @ dlanor:

I didn't know about the method he used for playing the game, can you explain how can this work?
