    Hello,

I have a few quick questions. I'll start off by giving my specifications. I have a scph-75001 ntsc refurbished ps2 from gamestop. I have a memory card with fmcb thanks to djflexmaster installed. I'm using verbatim datalife plus dvd-r 50 pack rated at 8x from newegg. I'll give you an example of a game. I've heard to burn games at half the max rated speed of the dvds, which I did, in this case 4x. It worked fine for some games, until I hit devil may cry. When I burned the game at 4x, gameplay was fine, however the beginning intro scene had horrible stuttering. After several retry burnings, I decided to up the speed to 8x, and it was gone. I deduced that I had burned the game too slow. My question is this, if I had burned devil may cry too slow then shouldn't the other games that I burned at 4x, like guitar hero 3: legends of rock, also be running slow? Also guitar hero 3 works flawlessly burned at 4x. Now another question. I decided to burn all games at 8x, in order to avoid wasting dvds as they are expensive. As devil may cry was resolved, I then tried metal gear solid 2. Again gameplay is fine, however this time during fmv cutscenes, I see a cd question mark icon in the top right corner every now and then. It's not heavily prevalent, as it depends on the cutscene. I burned the game at 4x, question mark error, 8x, so far I've only seen it once, and it was for a split second. My question is this again. Is 8x too slow for metal gear solid 2? If so, then why do other games work flawlessly at the same speed or even lower? I was pondering this question as the game is enjoyable, I just prefer to have my games work flawlessly, but it's something that I wouldn't mind living with. I was wondering if anyone had come across a similar problem. Also I'm using Imgburn to burn these games, and I have a laptop dvd burner that has a max speed of 8x for burning dvd-rs and +rs. I'll enjoy the feedback. Thank you. Ah one last thing, Silent hill 3 burned at 8x, intro cutscene at the very end where the screen turns black, just before the start menu, there is a stuttering of the fmv, otherwise game works fine. Also I do apologize in advance if a similar issue has been posted before.

For me i burn at 1x speed, everything including FMV works perfect, but before that i was trying half speed like you but it was 8x, FFX would just get stuck on the ESR boot....

Some people think Slower burn isnt better but i find it works best for me

Your got Verbatim DataLife Plus DVD-R discs, but are they manufactured by Taiyo Yuden (TYG02/TYG03) or Mitsubushi (MCC02RG20/MCC03RG20)?

You can find the manufacturer's code of your discs by inserting one of them into your CD/DVD writer and launching IMGBURN (Look at the panel on the right after selecting a mode like "read mode").

Burning your discs are 1x isn't always a good idea - in fact, it might be worse.
Some CD/DVD writers can't write well at slow speeds, and media that are meant for higher speeds (E.g. 8x, 12x and 16x media) might not receive optimal burning conditions when burned at 1x.

You should try to update your drive's firmware too.
Burning at a lower speed is only meant for older burners that cannot burn discs reliably at higher speeds.

Thank you for the input. It's manufactured by Mitsubishi. MCC02RG20. I've looked for driver updates but unfortunately none are available. My dvd burner is a TSSTcorp CDDVDW TS-L633C. I've heard that burning at the max speed (in this case 8x) isn't always good, yet it worked for certain games that didn't load properly if I burned at half speed (4x). It's rather strange, I want a speed that's rather consistent, instead of having to change speeds if a game doesn't burn properly as that will result in more coasters. Also the lowest speed that Imgburn is willing to burn for me, is 3x.

Its always best to burn at the mid-range speed as a 'general' speed for most burns. However, there are some games that are not going to work at the general speed and may need to be re-burned. There really is no 'consistent speed' for all games and have them all work flawlessly, unless you have a very high quality burner and your discr are high quality...plus your console is in perfect working order for the lens/laser.

The only way to really use the correct speed for each and every burn is to rip the game and use the same bin/cue or mds/mdf it produces. The cue and mdf are the ripping apps burn settings to re-burn the rip at the correct settings. Now as long as your using the same burner drive to burn that you ripped with, the speed should be 'pre-set' in those settings.

The optical drive driver is univeral, and would work with most optical drives on the planet.

Check out the link inside this thread here: Firmware update ts L633C firmware - Digital Video Forums

They seem to have found a link to a firmware update for your burner.

Thanks for the link but I ran into the same error as the original poster of that forum. Since it's a laptop that came with the burner, I would have to look at gateway's site for updates, which unfortunately gateway does not have. I'm out of look in terms of updating my firmware. Now for JNABK's suggestion, I'm a little confused. Let's say I rip a game at max read settings. Now I try to burn the resulting iso with its cue file. I click the cue file from imgburn and let it burn at let's say max write speed which is 8x for both the dvd burner and the dvd-rs. Now when it was ripping the game, the max read speed was higher than that, usually around 12x. Is that bad? A little confused by what JNABK meant by his post. Though I do appreciate the help. As for right now, I'll stick with the max write speed as it seems to be working fine for now.

Read speeds are different from write speeds. Write speeds are usually a lot less than read speeds. What i meant was , when you rip a game, the ripping app will determine the settings best to use to reproduce a copy and write these settings into that queue file. So its better to try using the original .cue or .mdf that was created with the .bin or .mds and best to use the same burner hardware and burner app for best results.

Think of it this way, burning to a disc is like developing film. Process it too fast and it gets over exposed, process it too slow and it gets under exposed. When you have no idea what should be set for the speed and no queue file is available, its best to use your burner's mid-range speed, as thats a general speed most would burn at anyway. Most use an Auto setting, meaning it will follow the queue file's setting and when none is used, it will default to the media type its burning to, usually the Max that media brand allows.

Its for that reason you should try to get the lastest updated firmware for your burner, as most modern burners use higher write speeds for todays many different media brands.
