I everyone. I have Final Fantasy XII Collector's Edition and I made a backup of it. However, after a few hours of gameplay, the dvd stopped working, and I had to make another copy from the original Dvd... With the new copy it worked again... but after some more hours it stopped working again... What's happening?
It seems, that your DVD-Rs degrade very quickly.
That could be due different factors.
-Some DVD+/-Rīs "photo-reactive layer"/dye even react after burning.
-Some DVD+/-Rīs dye is even just ultra-sensitive to ultra-violet radiation (sunlight).
In those cases, a DVD+/-Rs with metal-content in dye should prevent those "after-reactions".
Verbatim for example uses it in its MetalAZO-Dye.

-Another case, where that can happen is for example a poor "shielding".
Then there is no better way than choosing a DVD-Manufaqcturer, which produces discs with a good shielding.
There are some really good blank DVDs from Verbatim, which are called "UltraLife", or "Archival grade" which even include a gold-layer for a better reflection and which have a better shielding on data-side (take a look at verbatims wiki).
Those discs are available here in germany too, but only under the "Photo Printable"-Lable (even thought there are non-printable versions too, they are not available here,... :( ).
Btw.: I said somewhere, that the "PearlWhite 8x Verbatim" where relly good.
I now read on Verbatims Wiki, that those where relabled and bought from another part of Verbatim (thatīs why they do not have the typical Mitsubishi-Mediacode-ID).
the dvds were Verbatim Dvd-r and i burned them at 4x... I don't understand because all my other games work just fine...

Yes, of course the quality of the hardware that performs the burning will affect the quality of that burn, even more so than the 4x speed setting and other stuff. And if the Verbatim DVD-Rs you bought are similar to those sold here, then that speed setting is a bit on the low side.Quote:

Many thanks... I am from Portugal but i bought them from Spain and they are Azo as well and have 16x maximum speed... So I must record them in a good dvd burner with verbatim at AWS speed right?

See it this way,...
The photo-reactive layer which contains the data, holds "pits" as burned "points" and "lands".
The laser needs some time to turn on and off.
Assume, you burned a disc at 1x with normal result.
If you burn at 2x, the pit goes double as long but half-deep burned into the dye.
The laser-power-calibration is there to avoid that. It adjusts the laser-power to a higher level and the "laser-time" (time, it is on&off) is shortened.
So now assume your burner would use the same power-calibration and "laser-time" for 16x and the same for 1x.
If the 1x would be a good burn, the 16xburned would have pits 16 times as long as on the 1xburned media + the pit-deep would be only a sixteenth (1/16) of that of the 1x-burned Disc.
For example,... If you would use a media, certified for higher speeds than 4x, 4xBurner have not such a wide power-calibration-range to burn so deep into the layer/dye like an 16xburner would.
It is a bit hard to explain, especially since english isnīt my native language and I do not have much time.
DigitalFAQ gives ya some excelent answers and explainations about it. ;)
Anyway,... The suggested burning-speed is, because of 2 facts.
1. The laserpower-calibration-range is optimized to reach higher levels, than 1x. Normally a bit higher, than the middle of the burners maximum write-speed.
2. The dye of blank dvds is optimized to reach higher speeds than 1x. Normally a bit lower (or higher, depending on the media), than the half of the discs maximum certified speed.
So if both, your burner and your media are certified for 16x-speed for example, than 8x would be the best choice since it is near both optimized mid-ranges.
For example if you use a 4xburner and a 16x-media, it would be the best to choose the highest burning-speed the burner supports (thats, why some burners even do not support slow speeds, like 1x since they canīt calibrate the laser-power down to that level).
Even then, the resulting dvd might be a coaster or hard to read, since the maximum laserpower-calibration-range is still under the mid-range speed the dye is optimized for.
So if you burn with 4x on a 16xmedia, which is optimized for 8x the resulting burn will have pits, only half as deep as if you burn it with an 8xburner at max. for example.

i have tryed another midia... a cheap sky dvd+r tha i had here and after one hour of gameplay it doesn't have any scratch! not a single one xD i still don't know how...
So,... No problems with this new brand-dvd?
Btw.: The dye of 1st-class-media is trimmed to reach a bit higher "mid-range-power", than some cheap dvds.
So some cheap dvds might even work better with old burners (the issue for example with 4xburners I said earlier).
Those cheap dvds might give you better results with older burners, but still are not good for your PS2-Laser.
i have some dvd-r from sony here... if this just stops working again, i should burn a sony one at 8x right? both my other burner from philipps and the dvd are 16x.
