I'm using version 1.8 of Free McBoot and i have the normal options that were installed with it loaded onto a Fat model PS2.

I have also ripped the ISO file from my disk using IMGBURN and patched the ISO with the ESR_disc_patcher_GUI_v0.24a on AWS with a DVD-R disk.

However, when i try to start up the disk i burned it simply goes to a black screen for about a minute then back to the main menu. When i start up the system with the burned disk in the slot it shows the Free McBoot logo for a longer period of time, a short black screen then to the main menu.

At first the only thing that would work was God Hand, and nothing else would burn right, then i figured out someone had mixed DVD+R disks into the stack of blank disks and i kicked myself over that. So i went out and got more DVD-R Disks and tried burning the games again after patching them. No luck. And for some reason not even God Hand will boot up and i don't know why. I didn't change anything up in FMCB since i last tested it.

Now whenever i try to put any DVD-R disk in the system it just says "Disk Read Error" and never boots up.

I try booting it from the Splash screen at start up and it just shows the ESR logo screen and nothing else but black after that.

Can anyone help me out here? Are my ESR paths in FMCB configurations off or does something sound like it was put out of place? It seems every time i get closer to making this work something else gets thrown into the mix.

    Any feedback is greatly appreciated.

starting to sound like your laser is either dirty or weak.... this is why some here insist on good quality DVD-R media. cheaper brands are too hard for the SONY laser to read.

I tried cleaning it out and that seems to help, but it's still not good enough in my opinion. I've been using some qood quality disks as suggested. Some take forever to load before it realizes it's a disk and others don't.

Since i've found the issue now, i've heard that the Slim model ps2 has a better laser. Is that true?

    Generally, yes.
In general, all PS2 models after the SCPH-70000 series of consoles have good optical drives (Up to the kind of standard of normal optical drives).

@spud42: Not all fat PS2s have a Sony laser.
Some have a KHS-400R or HD7 laser that was manufactured by Sanyo.
    Unmodified SCPH-77006 with SM 3.6
SCPH-39006 with M-chip modchip, SCPH-10281 NA and refurb Seagate 80GB HDD

thanks sp193 i did know that but my meaning was "the PS2 laser" i did not mean to imply that all lasers were of the sony brand. i should have made it clearer...

Sounds like your Memorex already weakened your laser.

What kind of 'good quality media' are you using now?
    Check the Disc/Manufacturer-ID.
    PS2 V7/DMS3 V2 (FW:2.4b7); Seagate Baracuda 200GB
    PS2 V7/CC1.0 (FW:34 hacked v2 BM:2.1.6); Maxtor DiamondMAX9 PLUS 160GB
    PS2 SCPH-30004R; NoMod+NoLaser

    3xSony BBA
    3xSony MC 8MB
    MAX/Datel 16MB with Boot-CD
    MAX/Datel 32MB&64MB

    Custom FMCB 1.8b+ Beta-Build, my AIO 0.5, Sony&xRhino-Linux
