ESR and Verbatims

Hi, I was having a few stuttering issues with some backups, so I ordered a pack of Verbatim (MCC 03RG20) and also a DVD/CD Cleaning Disc.

When they arrived I remade a couple of backups from my originals, using imgburner, patched them and burnt them on the Verbs.

Before trying them I ran the disc cleaner through the PS2 (Fat 39003).

Now, even though it had improved a bit, the verbs (each one I burnt) still stuttered, but when I then retested my first backups, those that were stutterng terribly at first, (on Maxell - RitekG1) they ran perfectly. So I guess the Disc cleaner did the job and I had a dirty laser.

My Question though, is, Can you get 'Bad' verbs now-and-again ? As the apparently crappier discs now run great and the recommended verbs (ID : MCC 03RG20) run terribly. I'm guessing I was just unlucky and got a bad batch of Verbs, even though the Disc ID is of the good Mitsubishi brand. Is it plausible that even good brand Verbatims can have bad batches ?

I'm a bit wary of rebuying more Verbs now, and am considering sticking to the cheaper RitekG1 DVD-R's, but keep hearing how cheaper discs can wear the laser down quicker. So, if you can get 'bad' batches of otherwise good quality branded Verbs, I'll probably order more Verbs, but from a different supplier.

I hope someone can shed some light on my situation with the two makes of DVD-R's, as I have had a string of bad luck with my PS2 so far, and now want to keep it running as optimally as I can.

Well.... yes, you can get bad batches of branded discs (Assuming that those were really authentic Mitsubushi Verbatim discs, and not some clone by some really cheap-skate company), but they're really very rare.

It could also have been your burner, or the way you've burnt your discs (Never burn these discs at a too-low speed, or the quality of your burns may suffer).
Burn your discs at around mid to full speed of the "speed limits" of the media (If you're using those "MCC 03RG20" discs, then it should be around 8x-16x).

Your console might have also "preferred" DVD+R discs instead... (Unlikely though, but it's possible)

I always burn at 8x, though I've never tried higher speeds .. yet. I did try the same batch of verbs on my Xbox too, and it would not even detect the discs most of the time. I had to eject and then reload the tray several times for it to detect the disc in the drive. Yet again, I tried the cheaper Maxell on my Xbox (RitekF1 not G1, mistake in my previous post), and they worked great everytime.

Oh well, I'm guessing the Verbs are either a bad batch or some cloned ones, but the'Verbatim' is branded on the discs (silver top), they arent blank faces, so I'm guessing they arent clones. I'm gonna stick to the cheaper ones as they are working for me. Would you recommend sticking at 8x on the cheaper RitekF1 DVD-R, or perhaps 4x or even 12x.

Man I never have a problem with verbs. In fact those are the only brand of discs I use cause of how well they work. Your PS2 laser could possibly be tired.

@resincake: Have you tried another dvd-writer/PC yet?

Personally, I would try another batch of Verbatim DVD-R discs (And make sure that they're either from Mitsubushi or Taiyo Yuden...), burning them at 12x-16x instead of 8x.

As for those Ritek discs, I suppose that staying at around 8-16x (Only if 16x is their maximum rated speed) would be best...

There's a thread in a CD/DVD burning forums about some Verbatim MCC 03RG20 DVD-R discs performing poorer than those Ritek discs (Yea, and I think that they were talking about the same discs in question).

Their verdict was that there were a few batches of bad Verbatim discs out there. :(

FYI A XBOX's CD/DVD hardware is way better than the CD/DVD hardware found in older PS2s like yours.

What package did it come in? There is a white and blue package called "Verbatim Life Series" which are blanks Made by CMC mag, as opposed to mitsubishi, and they aren't as good. I don't know when verbatim started making this line, but you should avoid them, and buy the ones in the blue and orange container instead. If not, I am not sure what the issue is. But It could be that your laser is going in your PS2 or that your DVD burner is going bad.

It's probably just your PS2. Mine does the same thing. You said yours is an old Fat 39003. Mine is 35001. I also have a new slim model. The games played perfectly on some cheap "Value Disks" after cleaning the laser, but will not accept SONY. My new other works perfectly with the SONY DVD but will not play the junk "Value Disks".

I don't think the verbatims are bad, they would probably work on another PS2. Some older models tend to crap out earlier than others. Some people have old models that play fine, you and I have older models that will only accept cheaper disks.

The best way to test your PS2 optical unit its a copie of SAN ANDREAS/4x/Verbatim/ESR.

I use it to test unmodiffied consoles at work.
GTA SA is good to test bobbins to the max when loading.
Verbatim quality demands a good laser alignement and power(for good,trust me).
And your ps2 its a litlle old, you must desable it and clean up mechanics parts and add some lub.
After that you have to recalibrate laser power(just a touch) and position.
Its a work for a proffessional( a good one!!) but its the solution and the final answer to know how good its your lens.

Ahh, never use that cleaner discs, really!!!

Edit: i repare that problem almost daily,4x is the best speed for your lens.
