Sorry for the late response. Was out on vacation.

The game is Twinkle Star Sprites, JPN. It is a direct rip of retail copy.

The good news is that I tried the game on my brother's slim PS2, model number: SCPH-77001 and it works great.

The discs are Sony DVD+R, and my conclusion is that perhaps my fat PS2 which is version 1 has a laser that is either recognizing the disc with ESR mode, or it has something to deal with mechacon.

Nonetheless, thanks to everyone for your help. Fat PS2 I will use swap magic as necessary, and slim PS2 I will use ESR.

Apparently the guy was banned for piracy anyway, but for the next time please remember that the correct measure is to set "Booktype" to "DVD-ROM" in ImgBurn. Setting it to "DVD-R" may work, but is not the ideal (since original games are always "DVD-ROM").

But much of the time setting it explicitly is not needed, since ImgBurn will try to do that by default, provided that it knows the model-specific commands for the burner used. These differ with the burner brand, and some models are completely unable to do it, while others require a custom firmware installation to gain this ability.

So we can't just tell people to fix the booktype and consider that the end of the matter, since doing so could be impossible for them, at least without further assistance.

But of course, for such cases it would be better to simply have them use DVD-R discs instead, where the problem doesn't exist.

    Best regards: dlanor

A friend of mine has this problem too . Console 30004 reads original DVD games and movies but when he tries to run a backup with ESR .." Unknown media in drive " Is it possible for a laser to read original DVD's but not burned ones ?
    Would this help ? http://www.eurasia.nu/wiki/index.php...placementGuide
