It's a copyrighted image and the bios require the disc to have it in order to boot (through normal original disc procedure) so it was supposed to be used as legal support should people figure out the method of making signed PS2 discs.

Still, I like the PS2 logo and when modchips were the only decent boot choice I would avoid chips like Crystal just because it cuts the PS2 logo.
