My first gut reaction was "oh no, the boot process is going to be cluttered up with a splash screen". But a few seconds passes, and I began to actually think. Then I booted the R9 with splash screen....

IT'S GREAT! None of you after seeing this can seriously say it's bothering you. Memento 1.2 had a splash screen, and we all thought it was cool. They added it to 1.2 as a cool new FEATURE. The ESR screen hangs for a few seconds -- surely we can be patient enough to wait 2-3 seconds? You don't have to hit a button, it continues to boot up. The complainers here are being ridiculous children (or wailing babies?). Let's grow up and wait our 2 seconds.

I can't beleive I feel I need to point this out to some of you, but there are GOOD things about the splash screen:

    * It gives the disc a few more seconds to spin up and settle down before ESR kicks in and tries to read it. This could help some games that have been reported to not have enough time.

    * It clearly shows the version of ESR you are running. This lets you know for sure that you installed the new one correctly. Or if you put in that old memory card and forget which version you had installed...

    * It gives FFG his credit for his hard work. Instead of moaning, you should bow your head when you see the splash screen and praise him -- and wish him long life!

    Can you read at all?

If I wanted any money of it, I could just sell it when it wasn't public yet... but I turned the offer down (plus the price offered was so freaking low ). I wrote here it will be free and it is. Plus, how much could I get out of it? My monthly incomes are most likely many times bigger... I don't need any pocket money. So this "paypal" thing is more like an insult to me and, FYI, I feel offended.
So why the hell are you popping in with all that "give us money" thing?

    @bootlegninja

There is no need to, this discussion still matches the ESR subject... though I think it's pointless. Two people are trying to insult me just for putting name, version and place of my own application for display... not even giving any real disadvantages that could make me reconsider the thing.

Heck, I could remove the "by ffgriever" thing from there, it's not that I care that much about it (and it probably is the most annoying thing for you, am I right?). But why? Did someone else write it?

Edit: Or I'll simply publish the sources and consider the ESR project as finished. They would at least be much further than I was when starting it... because they would have a working application... with just some fixes needed. I started with blank "launcher.c" file.

    Leave it as it is.
It is YOUR DECISION, because it is YOUR PROGRAM.
People who could agree with that, shouldn't use it , or code it their-self.
They should be thankful, that you share it with the scene.

"codone" also mentioned the reasons, why it's there (and you in your initial-dialog).

The "bootable memory cards" is not really my thing to be moaning too much about it... I've just put there a small piece (cdvdinit/lang fix and loader for first versions). But since at least one of the authors (jimmikaelkael) shares my opinion...

I wouldn't oppose if the "installation service" was being sold. But the problem is that the man takes for the card 3-5 times it's worth and have changed it's name to not point at real software (thus, as I wrote it already, implicitly claiming it's his own... it simply appears it's a new MC hardware solution under some silly name, just like memor32 is).

I perform this type of service locally and charge 20 or 30 dollars depending on the type of system to install and set up everything and teach them how to use it. Cant really imagine charging more than that for such a simple process. Not to mention that where I live there really isnt a lot of interest in this kind of stuff .

Indeed this is a sad news . I was hoping ffg would release his source one day for the non beta release and I was thinking of the possibilities we had with that. But bcoz of a greedy fool I think we can kiss that idea bye bye... . Anyway ffg its better this way to not release source than some people simply stealing others work without giving any credit... I am fully with u...

Yeah ffgriever did the only right thing, I mean it's not only the lack of credit but also the fact that the person is literally screwing over the people he sells the MCs to.

Perhaps it would be an idea to take down the older versions of ESR just to prevent other people from selling an unfinished product to people without telling where the latest version can be downloaded.

Funny, I rather like the idea of Free McBoot having a simple splash screen but can't reason why(even if someone hadn't tried to sell it).

    @ffgriever

About the Splash screen, do you have to reset/clear the screen when doing the debug?

I was thinking that it might be possible just to draw coloured boxes on top the splash screen, a bit like a loading screen.

This way there wouldn't be a initial delay showing the splash screen(unless ESR already is doing something in the background while the splash screen is showed).

NB: I haven't read the latest pages so someone might already have suggested the same and you might have explained if it can or can't be done.

    EDIT:

No please don't, though ESR already is very stable.

Even though ESR isn't my work I really dislike the idea of someone without morals lucrating(sp?) on screwing over people on EBay.
Then it's much better to do like SMS and never release the source code or only release it to a trusted circle of people here who actually have the talent to expand on ESR(and not just rip out a splash screen).

I hope this incident haven't discouraged your other projects.

If Free MC Boot had a splash screen I think I'd just stick with the Independence exploit.

    Hello.

First, I'd like to thank ffgriever for all his/her hard work, and to express my condolences that someone's trying to turn a profit off it.

I was hoping someone might be able to give me some help, or at least explain what I'm dealing with.

I've been having success with ESR, but when I try to play one game, Super Robot Wars: Original Generations (jp), not much luck. It takes about 15 seconds before the flashing colors screens start up, and it takes a little extra time on the blue screen I think. After that, the screen goes black and nothing happens.

I don't know if it makes a difference but I'm using a DVD+R as the media.

    Thanks so much in advance.
