ESR not loading DVDs

Hello everyone,

I have tried to run Xenosaga III and Soul Calibur III on my PS2 via ESR (DVDV direct) and all that happens is that the ESR splash screen shows up, and then black screen. If I use the ESR GUI then it says "unknown media type", and still doesn't launch the game.

I have had the FMCB installed (reinstalled actually) on my MC on another's PS2 using multiversion install. When I tested Xenosaga III on his PS2 it would launch the ESR splash screen, give some flashing colors (which didn't happen on mine), and stop at black screen. On the other hand, Xenosaga III worked on his PS2 (didn't try SCIII) when using Swap Magic. He has a silver slim PS2.

For both games. When making image - I used ImgBurn with read speed set at AUTO. Then I patched it using ESR Patcher. Then I burned it to the DVD using 2x speed. When it finished burning it would verify and tell me that there were no errors.

Burning Utility:
NEC ND-3520A rev. 1.04
ImgBurn 2.4.2.0

Burning Media:
TDK DVD-R (no fancy makeup, just white cover where one can write on)

PS2 Specs:
Console: SCPH-30001
Browser: 1.20
CD Player: 1.20
Playstation Driver: 1.10
DVD Player: 1.30U

Memory Card:

Something interesting worth mentioning is the difference in sounds that a burnt DVD makes when it is in the drive compared to a legit PS2 DVD, maybe those sounds are there only because it's trying to read the DVD and if it loaded it, then it'd be normal sounding again. Well obviously my PS2 can't read those DVDs using ESR for whatever reason.

You have an old console, with an old laser.
It might not recognize the disc 100%.
Another thing,... 2x is utterly slow.
Just try a higher speed (4-12x).

Aside from burning at 4x (ive already threw out about 7 DVDs) what other course of action can I take? any alternative methods?

If it says "unknown media type", then it's definitely not ESR's fault. Your disc has not been properly recognized by the hardware and that's all. Either lens/emitter issue, burn/media quality or other media related problems. Are you sure this is DVD-R not DVD+R? This would make a huge difference.

My advice? Go get a decent DVD+R media, your burner should provide good quality burns, but it may be broken (worn out?), so you might want to go to any of your friends and burn there (just remember to change the book type of DVD+R to DVD-ROM).

The only scenario when ESR GUI detection routine is at fault, is when it would recognize PS2DVDV as DVD-Video (but that would most likely mean, there is something wrong with the compilation anyway).

You asked me, "Are you sure this is DVD-R not DVD+R?" does this mean that it might work if it is DVD-R (Info in ImgBurn and on DVD label indicates DVD-R)? If that is the case, why do you recommend me to get a DVD+R?

2nd Question, Is there any way for me to find out about the quality of burns that my burner does? I know that one of the burners (SH-S203B) in my house gives me error when verifying, so I use one that doesn't give me those (mentioned in 1st post).

3rd Question, How do I change the book type? When I burn using ImgBurn it gives me the following info after I select the ISO regarding the ISO:
Imp ID: DVD-ROM GENERATOR
File Sys: ISO9660, UDF (1.02)

4th Question: Within ImgBurn is there anything I have to change within the settings window before burning anything?

He's asking "Are you sure this is DVD-R not DVD+R?" because if it's DVD+R and it's burned as DVD+R that's on most of the cases is a problem then,and he's recommending you to use DVD+R because you can and you must book type them(only DVD+R supports booktyping to DVD-ROM and DVD-ROM are original DVD-Video disk and original games).

Since you have Samsung DVD burner,place a DVD+R disk in the tray(I recommending you to use Verbatim)click on the book icon at the lower right,choose Samsung,on Change for choose DVD+R and on New Settings choose DVD-ROM and click on Change(a message will appear with success on it).Then burn you ISO at 4x or less

I also get "unknown media type" (I use sony dvd+r 16x discs), even when I set the book type to dvd-rom. I guess im just unlucky that my ps2 laser wont read them. :)

I still have not tried burning to a new media, BUT.
I have gotten the DVDs to launch using Cogswap method (on my PS2).

Does this rule out (or introduce) some possibilities of failure using ESR?

ESR is a bit more dependent on good burns.
Just good to know for keeping your laser alive. :D

Probably it is, because with the cogswap-method your disc is verified as valid before.
Did you notice long loading-times, or something (compared to the original)?
