Please understand that the kind of conversion described in the tutorial you linked to above only applies to CD games, but never to DVD games.

CD and DVD games need different methods of ripping, and only the CD games need the media type conversions described in that tutorial and some others like it.

For a game on DVD (like the majority of all PS2 games), the basic method is very simple.

1: Rip ISO file from original disc using "DVD Decrypter"
2: ESR-patch the ISO file using any of the valid ESR patchers
3: Burn the patched ISO to DVD-R using "ImgBurn"

No other steps are needed...!!!
And doing the other steps suitable for CD could mess things up for you with a DVD game.


"DVD Decrypter" and ImgBurn are different generations of the same program, and ImgBurn is the newer version and therefore better aware of burning needs of modern hardware and media. But in the updates some good features for generic DVD ripping were 'lost'. And that is why the older version is preferred for ISO-ripping while the newer version is preferred for burning the backup discs.

I followed your guide now, but when I tried to rip an iso file from original using DVD decrypter, it says it cannot find the folder "video_ts". So I used another programs (e.g. IMGburn or nero) and this time nothing appears on the screen after the ESR-screen. that's very strange.

But thanks for your advice :)

This indicates that you had some setting inappropriate for the type of ripping done. The program was made to cope with various protection methods for DVD-Video movies, and some of the settings make it insist on a valid DVD-Video structure, which is obviously not present on an original PS2 game disc.

The message you mentioned will always be given (for example) if you try to do a rip with the setting "File F" in the "Mode" menu. And that is the wrong setting anyway, as it is the mode used to extract the movie files from a DVD-Video movie. That is the cause of the error message, since such files are always stored in the "VIDEO_TS" folder of a movie disc.

What you need to do to change this is to open the "Mode" menu with its three entries "File F", "IFO I" and "ISO", and then move the mouse over the last of these entries. Doing so will unfold a side menu with the two entries "Read R" and "Write W", where you should click the former, so as to indicate that the wanted mode is intended to 'Read' an 'ISO' file from the disc.

Then you click the folder symbol in the 'Destination:' selection box, to open a fileselector where you can select a path and enter a filename for the new ISO file that is to be created. And when you've made that choice the program should be ready to start the ripping. And this you then command it to do by clicking the big button containing a DVD disc icon and a green arrowhead pointing from that disc icon towards an HDD icon.

The ripping process should then start and all you have to do is to patiently wait until the program tells you that the process is complete, at which time it will play a completion chime sound to catch your attention. (You'll see a normal growing progress bar during the work too).

Hopefully the above is enough to get you started with "DVD Decrypter"

I don't like to be a nag about it, but you are wasting your time trying to do such ripping with most other applications, as they simply are not up to the task of doing it well. So you do need to get DVD Decrypter working for best results.

ImgBurn is also good, though not as good as "DVD Decrypter", while Nero and most other PC-focused tools are rather worthless for a PS2 game disc. They can burn a ready-made ISO well enough, but they can not rip originals well at all.
