One thing you should do is to doublecheck that the ESR disc is validly patched and that you used high-quality media for it.

If you use IsoBuster, this is one of the few tools able to show the validity of an ESR disc. Most other applications will show only a single filesystem for any disc, even if it contains several. But IsoBuster will display both the ISO9660 filesystem and the UDF filesystem, showing their differing content. (ISO==the real game files, UDF==dummy DVD-Video files)

Another less detailed test is to insert the disc into the console while running uLE with its "Disc Control:" setting set to "ON". While in the main menu uLE will then display disc status whenever a disc is inserted or removed. That status will change during this verification (while "Detecting Disc" is displayed) but should end up with the indication "Stop Disc == ESR DVD (off)" for the case where no modchip is used and the ESR driver is not yet active.

If the ESR driver has been activated (via mcard ESR variant or ESR GUI 'Launch App' exit) then the final result should instead be "Stop Disc == ESR DVD (on)", and that may also be the result with some modchip active.

In either of the above cases, where the disc type is indicated as "ESR DVD" (on or off) you can also try using the uLE command "MISC/PS2Disc" to launch the game. But if the disc type is NOT indicated as "ESR DVD" then there is no use trying to launch it, as you have a completely failed burn, or possibly dysfunctional modchip interference.

When properly ESR-patched and burned to a high-quality disc the japanese FFX International works very well with ESR, regardless of your console region. I've played it a lot on both my SCPH-39004 and my SCPH-77004 consoles (both european PAL units). But it will of course play exactly as originally intended, using NTSC video mode. So hopefully your TV set is able to handle that, like mine is. Otherwise you may need a program like GSM (== GS Modeselector), to enforce a video mode supported by your TV set before launching the game. 'FFX Int' works fine with GSM active and that is how I normally use it myself, even though my TV handles NTSC well, because I like to use GSM for centering the screen perfectly. GSM has its own thread in the Homebrew/Dev forum, so download it there if you need it.

The disc media type I always use is "Verbatim AZO 16X DVD-R", which ImgBurn identifies with the product code "MCC03RG20".
This is highly recommended for reliable game backups.

First off you should have reported correctly exactly what message was displayed.

I am very sure that I never coded a message into uLE stating "stop disk so esr dvd (off)", as I always use different spelling and capitalization, and I have no idea where the word "so" came from, as that should have been "==".

But if the final part of that message really was "ESR DVD (off)", then you can proceed to try launching the game. From uLE this is easiest done by opening the FileBrowser (normally on 'Circle' button shortcut), and use it to browse into the "MISC/" pseudofolder where you then start the subprogram command "PS2Disc".

For an ESR-patched disc that command will launch ESR as installed for your FMCB setup, and then hopefully ESR will start your game.

Btw: You still haven't mentioned the media type/quality you used, nor the burning method (application and burn speed are quite important), which may very well be factors in any failure to launch a game with ESR.

Are you sure you have a correctly installed FMCB setup, including "mc0:/BOOT/ESR.ELF" ?

If you got back to the uLE menu, this means that no launch of the ESR elf file was ever made, and that should only happen if that file failed the test for a valid ELF format file. This test obviously will fail if the "ESR.ELF" file is not present, is damaged, or is incorrectly named.

    Btw:
There is no command named "PS2Disk" in uLE. The correct command name is "PS2Disc".
I don't want to be a boring nag about such things, but attention to detail is important.

If you have even a single letter misspelled or miscased in the name of a file to be launched, then you will never get it working. So this kind of attention to detail really does matter.

Edit: Ooops! I almost missed one of your replies...

    This explains every failure.

It is impossible to use ESR to launch any original game disc. In order to use ESR you must rip the game disc to an ISO file, then use the ESR disc patcher to add the ESR patch to that ISO, and finally burn the ISO to a DVD-R disc.

I'll say it again in a different way: ESR can only be used to run a copy of a game, and that copy must be patched in a specific way to work at all. And the best tool for such patching is the "ESR Disc Patcher" made by the same programmer who created ESR.

ESR works only because the mechacon of the PS2 'believes' that the game disc is really a DVD-Video movie (which Sony permits even on burned media), and the only reason for that 'belief' is the ESR patch. The original 'FFX Int' disc you used does not have any such patch, so ESR is not able to do anything for it. You must make an ESR-patched copy of the game in order to run it through ESR.

But this also means that the message you got earlier stating "ESR DVD (off)" was fake, since that message can only occur when a disc with an ESR patch is present in the CDVD drive of the PS2. This is the part that I can not understand at all...
