I've searched and read atleast 10 different posts on different forums about this but I can't figure it out for the life of me. I've tried 9.2, 9.2 and v10 elfs. Ones that said they are prepatched, ones I patched myself. And I can't get any of them to work. Either when I try to boot the elf from either mass or mc0 it just goes to a black screen and does nothing, or it'll do the opening Codebreaker loading screen and then go into SMS, or it will do the opening screen and then go black. I can't get into the section to even select cheats no matter what I've done. I've read up everywhere on it, I've played around with different configurations and set ups and files for the last hour or so and I'm just completely stumped and can't figure out what to do. Most of the stuff I'm reading keeps confusing me and hoping someone can give me a step by step for retards to maybe get it to work for me.

And sorry about making a post about this when there are a couple of them on here but I couldn't figure out what I needed from any of those. Noone seemed to have the issues that I'm having.

Any help at all would be very appreciated.

Do you by chance have a slim PS2 with a model number of SCPH-7500x or higher and a USB device plugged in when you are trying to run it?

No. I saw that in one of the many posts I read that with a USB in it won't run. I have a version 12. But even without a USB drive in it just sits on a black screen.

::EDIT:: The only time I've even managed to get the Codebreaker loading screen is when I run the elf OFF my USB. Running it from mc0 always black screens.

Are you sure it's black screen.CB is pretty big program and when you're loading it from memory card it takes ~1 min to load

The only way I think it will work with ESR is when you patch your CB for HDD use and after that place CB_launch.elf to your BOOT folder so after you select your cheats and "start the game"(don't insert the disk and disable the auto eject function)to go back to FMCB menu=>Load ESR and then insert and start your game

Yeah I've left it sitting on the black screen for a few minutes each time I tried just to make sure. And I have the cb_launch.elf and I load it up without a disc in the tray and without my USB in the drive. So I'm lost as to why it doesn't boot up.

    Just to be sure.
    cb_launch.elf or CB_launch.elf
    is your file?
Because the correct one is CB_launch.elf

Sorry, yeah it's CB_launch.elf. I just didn't capitalize the CB last time. But I just tried it again with a new .elf file and again it just sits on a black screen with no USB drive in and no disc in the tray. Can't even get it to do the blue Codebreaker screen after sitting for 5 minutes.

Is it working when you use the CB_launch.elf the patched CodeBreaker for hdd and when you're starting if your your USB(since you've said that it load successfully when you start it from your USB).

And I don't thing having plugged usb device has something to do with this. It's working here on my hdd and disk games.I load it from FMCB menu=>select the cheats=>start the game=>go back to FMCB menu and from there I choose to load HDloader or insert a disk and the cheats are working

Well this is weird. I just tried running it off my USB again and this time it actually worked. The last few times I tried it, it booted into SMS after the Codebreaker screen came up, but before it gave me the option to select cheats.

Not sure why it's working now but I'm not complaining. Thanks for all the help though.

What I don't understand is how CB could possibly launch SMS, since that is something it was never designed for or patched for doing (unless you did that yourself).

What is your normal boot setup ?
Do you use modchip Dev1 or FMCB or some other softmod to boot homebrews.

The CodeBreakers patched for use with HDL/ESR will normally look for files named CB_launch.elf or BOOT.ELF (or boot.elf on HDD) in various standard locations. But the file names can be modified when using the patcher to modify the CB elf, so a prepatched elf may give surprising results.

Normally it is the "CB_launch.elf" file that will be launched, but if that is missing the normal boot file will be launched instead. If your normal boot file is SMS, that could explain its getting launched this way, but otherwise it's a mystery to me.

    Best regards: dlanor
