Can't get ESR to work : What blank DVD's should I use?
Can't get ESR to work : What blank DVD's should I use? –

So after finally being able to get mcboot on my ps2, now I can't get ESR to work with my disks. I am using Staples DVD-R's which suck and probably are the problem so what DVD's are good for PS2? How are these?---

I'm on a SCPH-30001 V4 I think. If the laser is going (as I had read in another thread with the ESR Unknown media in drive problem) should I try going the USBadvance route instead?
Thanks for your time

well Sony and Verbatime are good
btw here is a couple of question for you:
1- which program you used to make a backup of your original games ?
2-did you patched the games with esr patcher ?
3-and on which program you used to burn and on which speed ?
and usbadvance is dead use OPL if you are gunna use usbhdd or internal hdd

my 3 favorite discs in order, Falcon, Taiyo Yuden, and Verbatim.
I use IMGburn to burn my discs and burn them at the max rated speed.

They're perfectly fine and as AMP have stated above, Sony and Verbatim media are best to go with.

Let me confirm what AMP said, USBadvance is dead, not worth using anyway as game compatibility is pretty poor. OPL is much faster, reliable and much more compatible with latest games and it's still developed. Remember to get only DVD-R discs because lasers used in up to V9 PS2 models have serious problems while reading DVD+R media. You should try burning them with x4-x8 speed. If that won't help, the issue you're currently experiencing may be caused by your DVD burner ( what dvd burner you're using ? ) or laser going dead ( you can check that easily ) Check this thread, everything has been covered here:

@shadovraven
I am not having a problem with playback this method has worked for me for years, I know some people have better results with slower write speeds I was just letting the OP know what I find works best for me.

Sorry, I misunderstood you with the person who made this post, I'll correct my post.

Thank you, I just recently found this out about OPL in another thread. I am going to try this out with my usb external hard drive.
I am sorry for my extreme noobishness but what exactly is the internal hdd that you are refering to? I have my PS2 bone stock from when I got it years ago so is there a unit I have to purchase for the expansion bay? The impression I get is with OPL the internal hdd is better to use than through the usb port.
I'm also on a Mac, so I just used disk utility. I tried using imgburn on my dell but it couldn't recognize the cheapo staples disks. I would prefer to use my mac to burn games (and to get OPL running if possible).

To use internal HDD in FAT PS2 you have to buy Network Adapter that will be plugged into PS2 expansion bay along with HDD, it looks like this and it's the best way if you can get it:

Second way it's to use HDD connected to PS2 via usb but as you've noticed this is the worst method as the game loading times are slower than from discs and HDD and FMV stutter in most of games. There're also some specific "exclusive" issues for certain games too, like increased slowdowns in Killzone and lagging in Champion Return to Arms when playing from USB.
There's third method too, you can connect your PS2 and PC with network cable and play games from your PC hard drive directly on your PS2, you need Network Adapter for that.

If you're using a Mac, then disk utility should work (always worked for me anyway) but the best program I used so far is toast.

Ok thank you I have decided to go this route. Do you know of some compatible hard drives for the ps2? I probably would get something around 250gb.
