Audio CD patcher
Would it be possible to make a momentoteam type patcher that would patch PS2 CD-Rom iso's into a hybrid audio cd that would work with ESR to boot CD based games, wouldn't this have a better compatibility rating than converting cd based games into dvd's or would it have a problem because audio cd's load the browser? also is there possibility this method could load PS1 backups.
Yes, I hope too that this is possible... It would be a neath solution for playing backups of my old CD games. It would mean: no more fooling around to try and make a DVD copy of the CD, which is sometimes frustrating (or is there an automated tool to do that in the mean while?). Please, please, pretty please... :)
I don't know about you guys but i have no problem converting CD games to DVD, found 2 hard games to convert that was the MotoGP 1/2 from NAMCO that was a pain in the *ss because of the copy protection, MotoGP has 2 tracks, one with dummy audio and other with a file with 1GB called silence.ca that was impossible to copy.
But they work fine after the convertion.
What method did you use to convert? also you can recreate dummy files of any size with this http://www.mynikko.com/dummy/ if needed.
I think we need a method that'll still retain the exact LBA table as the original.

What you ask is horribly difficult. DVD-Video uses a standard UDF filesystem which includes all the normal forward error correction data and such of a normal data DVD (actually more error correction than a CD to handle the density vs. scratch size). Data CD-ROM's are similar in that they also contain error correction data. However, audio CD-ROM's do NOT contain the level of error correction that a data CD-ROM does. This is why a scratch on an audio CD will often times result in a pop or skip but a scratch on a data CD doesn't always ruin a file (and even if it doesn't result in a pop, there is a greater tolerance for loss in audio before you actually hear the corrupt data). Plextor drives are notorious for being able to read scratched audio discs well and use what little error correction an audio CD does have to repair the music, but the PS2 laser is not even in the ballpark. So, in a nutshell you could trick the PS2 using an audio cd (this has obviously been done before by a couple formats), but scratches will quickly render the disc useless as there just isn't enough error correction there for the PS2 to rebuild the data. The developer would have to write a module that would have to understand its own forward error correction system and then write a windows version to encode the data + ecc into audio. It would make more sense to just convert the CD to DVD so you gain not only the extra ECC of a DVD, but save wear and tear on the PS2 laser and DVD's are much faster than CD. I would not hold your breath on getting PS1 discs to work ever.
Well, there are combination CDs, known as hybrid discs, that have audio and data on the same disc. They're the kind of CDs that will pop up a music player when you insert them into your computer, but still play on a regular CD player. Theoretically, couldn't you make one of these discs with say a 1 second "song" on it, so it doesn't use up any space, that the mechacon will recognize as an audio CD and grant access, and then, using homebrew code, have the drive read off the separate data section?
As ybarra explained there is no need for that in this case and no "special" software.
