So basically i insert the disc and it autoloads to ESR, after the colors stopped flashing it goes straight to ULaunchElf.
Through which i am able to boot the disc by browsing to the SLES file, but shouldn't this happen automatically?

For CLI mc version of ESR it's normal.
Like Berion said (in other words), your ESR.ELF file must be a copy of the one named "ESR beta r9b mcard.elf" from the original ESR r9b release package.
That one is intended to first load and activate the ESR device drivers and then start a homebrew program from MC to let it have access to the ESR patched disc. This is very useful when you need access to a burned disc from uLaunchELF (== uLE) or from other homebrews you may start from uLE, such as emulators etc which may then access ROM files and other data from the CD or DVD just as if you had a modchipped console. So it is definitely useful, though not so convenient for running games.
For directly running games you should normally use the one named "ESR beta r9b dvdv direct.elf", renamed to ESR.ELF in the "BOOT" folder of the MC.
Even so, it makes good sense to have a copy of each of the other ESR elfs on your MC too, for use in other cases than for the normal PS2 games. (eg: Some games require you to use "ESR beta r9b dvdv direct off.elf" for compatibility reasons.) The alternate ESR elfs can then be used by booting disc-less into uLE and then inserting a disc and launching the appropriate elf from the uLE menu (or from its FileBrowser).
