I'm sure I'm not the only one who's noticed an increase in the number of Spambot accounts as of late. Before the forum was upgraded IIRC it used a Captcha that required some degree of thought instead of blindly copying down words - is there any reason why this can't be added to the latest vB software?

If you're looking for any suggestions then Ads Captcha provide a "Slide-To-Fit" Captcha whereby the user has to move a slider to solve a picture puzzle. Not only is this nigh on impossible for a bot to solve, it's also a way of adding targeted ads to the registration form to earn a little revenue in a very unobtrusive manner.

On the forum that i'm a mod of, we were getting quite a bit of spam from using Captcha's. We switched from using Captcha to asking small questions like "Are you a human" or "What do you put in a toaster" and seen bots be reduced tremendously. Now it's like 1 bot a month instead of several bots a week.

    Yeah two things I did.

Was ASK a question, like "What is the First Letter, of the Company that makes the Playstation brand?"

You have to answer S or s -- Or you can't get any more information or signup.

The second thing I did, was installed something called "SolveMedia", which was 99% better, then the captchas that been totally broken for years now.

Near the end, to stop even "bad humans" like trolls, or outright baddies, I installed something called "StopForumSpam", a third-party company that checks your email, username you pick, and email to database of reported "baddies" from other large forum operators.
