I haven't touched my PSP in ages, and a few days ago I decided to start playing it again. I have a PSP1001 with the 5.00 M33 CFW, and I'm not sure where I should go from there in terms of CFW. I do not have a pandora battery, although I read you can softmod a regular battery by running some kinda of homebrew app? I do not have a magic memory stick either, though I have also read that they're easily DIY made.

Edit-Not really related to my question, but...
Awhile back I tried playing Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. I honestly felt I would enjoy the game, but the control scheme(the claw) absolutely destroyed it for me. My question is, would it be feasible to play it with a ps3 controller through remote joy, and remap the L2/R2 keys to left/right?

I was in the same boat you were, 2 weeks ago. I decided to go with 6.39 PRO-B8 CFW with the CIPL flasher. This is a permanent CFW that is also on the latest OFW. Pretty sweet.

Just realized I posted this in the Tutorials and Guides forum, and not homebrew(I think it would be better there?). My apologies.

Do I need the pandora battery to upgrade to/use that CFW? or anything else?

This. And I think you want to be on 6.39 official first. So upgrade via the network update or a 6.39 official pup online, then install the 6.39 CFW. Then afterwards (as long as you do indeed have a PSP 1000), install the CIPL flasher for a permanent experience.

What makes this CFW so great is the in built PS1 games support and the ISO driver that is Inferno, this by far is the best firmware you can get. Also you can downgrade back to 6.20 firmware if you do not like this firmware. Be careful and test the permanent patch that is the CIPL flasher to make sure that it will work other wise you will get a brick.

ok im kinda in the same boat, but am still clueless...

I got a jap psp model which was on 1.50 on launch, and now have a cfw installed 5.50 GEN-D2. I totally forgot how and when I did this, I am from the dark alex era when I knew my way around.

I tried to install 6.39 OFW but its saying I got a version 9.90 and there is no reason to update. So I am totally clueless... also I don't know either which is the best CFw... is it 6.60 or what? And can I still run homebrew stuff I got on this old psp or what?

Ok you need to change the version in your plugins folder. You already have CFW 5.50 GEN -D3 and that tends to modify the system version making it appear as 9.90. Change it and then try to update.

Its simple, all you need to do is follow my guide after you update to OFW 6.60, after that its straight forward, to update and play and its one of the best firmwares for CFW for your model of a 1000 PSP PHAT model.
