Need help buying a psp
Need help buying a psp –

I am entirely new to the homebrew/jailbreak/custom firmware scene. The first thing I want to do is get a psp but be sure that I get the right model so that I can play backup games. What model should I be looking for? I have only briefly read about this, so I know there are problems with certain models.
What are the pros and cons of each model with regard to playing backup games? I know this is probably an often asked question, but you help is really appreciated!

All models can be modified with LCFW, however only PSP 1000 and certain 2000 models can have a CFW flashed on to it permanently, both can play backups and run homebrew. The difference between the two is that LCFW is lost as soon as the PSP loses power. However, as long as you have a memory card with ~10MB of free space you can constantly recover your LCFW. If you are going to buy a PSP for homebrew purposes, just remember that all 1000's can be fully flashed, some 2000's can be fully flashed and no 3000's or PSPGo's can be fully flashed. They can all have LCFW.
From personal experience, I had a PSP 1000, but the joystick just stopped working on me. Currently my PSP 2000 has no problems running 6.60 PRO-C LCFW. I also modified my friends PSP 3000 with no problems at all. So it all just comes down to which one you want to get.

Thanks! I read here that I need a special type of battery for 1000/2000 models but not for 3000 which has the temporary firmware. Can you confirm this for me?

You're talking about a pandora battery, that is used along with a magic memory stick to recover older bricked PSP's or flash Custom Firmware onto them. All PSP models can have a temporary Custom Firmware flashed onto them by loading the correct files on the PSP. Just download the correct files from Downloads - procfw - X-Generation Aftermarket Firmware for Playstation Portable there. Each file is for different firmwares, if you don't know which one your PSP is on just update to the latest one and download 660PRO-C. After the download, extract the contents and go into the PSP/GAME folder and copy the FastRecovery and PROUPDATE and put them in your PSP in the PSP/GAME folder, make sure its the folders not just to contents. When you do this, safely remove the PSP and look under the GAME menu in your PSP and open the memory stick. Load the ProUpdate program, when loaded it will give you a few options, look through them to make sure but I believe pressing X installs the custom firmware for you. After you do that, your PSP is modified. However, if you ever turn it off or if it runs out of battery, just load Fastrecovery to go back into the custom firmware state.

Not needed anymore. I like 6.20pro better than 6.60. I can't remember what, but some homebrew didn't work on 6.60.
Anyway, update to whatever ofw you want. Then load the same version of pro.
Done!
If you have a 1000 you can make your battery. Just search for hellcats pandora. (I think. It's been a long time.)

For every ones info 1G 2G 3G 4G 5G and if you know what your doing 9G can all be on 6.20CFW and PRO can be perm for those
BTW that is almost every model except 7G and 11G and 7G is 3000 and so is 9G 11G is Euro only with no wifi so most likely you could run perm with PRO on almost anything you get

V10 SCPH-50001 with Network adapter SCPH-10281 500 G HD
PSP 3000 9G 6.20 PRO CFW Perm
Unofficial FMCB v1.8C OPL self compiled HD and SMB preferred
Is how all good gaming systems came to be

Thanks everyone!
I got both a 1000 (used for like 45 bucks) and a 3000. I hope to mod both. The 3000 came with firmware 6.60. I haven't checked the 1000 yet.
