I think this is really silly. I also don't know why they didn't include an HD-DVD drive.

I suppose it's because they're still not quite sure if HD-DVD will prevail in the format wars. That and the fact that the drive will only be used for movies kinda limits its appeal.
Yeah but it seems what they wanted to do with the elite was simply create a "pimped out" machine. So I figured why not go all the way and throw in every feature possible?
I have have read that Microsoft plans to put an BluRay drive in the
X-Box Elite lol
I have a feeling that they are already giving up on the format wars for not including a HD-DVD drive...
HDMI is a sorely missed option on the current 360.
I've seen both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray movies playing on identical screens and players side by side. In my opinion HD-DVD looks better. Blu-Ray is very grainy for some reason. Having said that, I read somewhere that Blu-Ray is outselling HD-DVD 4 to 1. I think however, the PS3 has a lot to do with it. Many peeps who bout a PS3, probably went out and purchased a Blu-Ray movie to see what the fuss was about.
Though I've never seen a HD-DVD movie, I really don't think image quality has anything to do with the format, but rather either the source material or the people in charge of the transition. That being said, the PS3 is no doubt the reason behind that lead.
