Hi. Sorry to hear about the database.

I found this forum via a thread about the D2Pro for the Wii only working sometimes. I am having the exact same issue with 2 different chips in 2 different Wiis so I was hoping to get the conversation started again. If this is no longer a place to talk about Wiis then I apologize (At least I put this in the OT forum).

Here's the first post from the original thread:

Hey folks. Looking for some advice on a recent D2pro installation and some subsequent problems. Not quite sure what the issue is and it involves a lot of work to troubleshoot so I am hoping someone here might know what is going on.

I had a d2pro chip installed on a recently purchased wii that was not experiencing any problems. Afterwards, I began to experience "unable to read disc" in the disc channel or the black+white text screen from time to time. Some times, as long as the wii was not turned off and on again, it would work no matter what disk was inserted (backup or original). When it started giving the error, it also did not matter which type was inserted -- it would not work. When it did not work, the drive would spin and click twice then repeat a few times before the error for backups... for originals, it would spin then just stop, no clicking. When it worked, it could play both without issues. I could play either no matter how many times I switched games, only after a powerdown and power on could this error pop-up again.

I had my installer take a look over it again, wipe the lens, give a clean up inside. He's experienced so I do not think it is the installation? The system was only about 2 weeks old without any problems whatsoever over the period. The only way it sometimes works is if I unplug the power and plug it back in, but that's maybe 1/15 tries when it finally works.

I'm going to send it into Nintendo because it might be the laser... but the more I think about it, could it be the chip itself? Here is my reasoning... if it is the laser, it would be more sporadic. Once working, it shouldn't be able to play an endless amount of disc's... right? It would be random each disc, not dependent on that particular power up. Secondly, it shouldn't treat the originals and backups differently... the same cycle should be happening if it couldn't read the discs?

Just hoping for some help here. It is a lot of work to take in the wii and wait around for alterations and then test again... hoping for some help for me and my installer (who is probably already sick of me and my problems)! He seems like a good guy so I'd like to save him some time if possible, and me since I have already spent about 8 hours of driving time on this. These are not DRE's btw. When it is not working, it does not recognize the discs whatsoever. Originals won't spin up, but no black screen with white text... just unable to read disc in the disc channel (cd floats up and the error comes up). With backups though, it will cycle with the 2 clicks for 4 or 5 times before going to the black screen. When working, everything is terrific... Classic d2c quality, no freezes or dre's... haven't had probelms with media brands or any such things. Any ideas?

I have attempted a whole slew of things... leaving the disc in, out... putting disc in while off, while in home menu, while in disc menu etc... the only thing I have found is that, while it works... it works from teh start and endlessly until turned off. While not working, it will not begin to work again until it is unplugged from the back... maybe. Please feel free to ask for me to test any methods or things that might help solve this.
