well, i got a soldering iron (15 watt) from the US, but it has three prongs! like the attached picture, and all stepdown convertors only support 2, should i just cut the third one off or is there a solution? also, is it really needed? thanks.

Yes you can just cut the ground off ( the round one) It will work fine and all, just wont be grounded, which i dont really suggest. Another than that would work is to cut it off, solder it to a grounded Aussie plug, just the ground wire that is, so that its still grounded.
so it doesn't really make a difference that it's grounded to an aussie 240v power supply?
ground is ground, current isnt beeing outputed by it, it will work.
I have an old iron here that isn't grounded at all, so I think he is safe.
unless the ones that are grounded are diff somehow?
You should be OK. I've taken the ground prong off of my old IBM PC so I could plug it into an extension cord... it's been fine.![]()

Unless the voltage rating for the soldering iron written on a plate is in the range 100v - 240v then you are in danger if you plug it into 240v.
The voltage transformer from 240 - 110 is the correct way. You can put on an ordinary US two pin plug after cutting off the 3 pin plug.
Another way would be to buy an Aussie plug adaptor to US 2 pin. Then put an Aussie plug on the iron; plug the adaptor into the convertor; plug the Aussie plug onto the adaptor. That'll deliver 110v correctly.
I never said to plug it into the 240v charlie. I said to cut off the ground, then just plug it into the step down, but that you could use the ground of an aussi plug. You gettin me? Not the (-) of it,just the ground, ground meaning it is connected to the earth, and as far as Im aware the earth is the same over in Australia as Earth is over here, ours is made of dirt, not sure bout yours. For power you plug into the step down, i never said to plug into the aussi outlet for power.

Spose Necro - you are right to the letter.
Hmmm. Just that I wouldn't have offered the advice you did without the warning.
Maybe that's because I'm a Dad! (and have raised a few sons your and Foo's age!). And rescued them from 240v. A couple of times. Each. Ouch.
