Here comes an off-topic pc-related question:

Im running winamp on my laptop and stream the sound over my home network to another pc (with a much better sound card) with a plugin. However, the plugin lags a lot so i wonder if anyone knows of any prog. or "virtual sound card" which could do the job for me -- stream the sound from the laptops sound card to the other pc via the network. I've googled for like 3 hours now >_<

Datarates and so forth wont be any problem, 44khz 16 bit uncompressed stereosound requires around 150 kbytes/sec...

im not sure what your problem is but what you can do is make your folder that has your music a shared folder on the network. (right-click the folder, properties, sharing > share folder on network) then on your other computer, you can access that folder by going to my network places, view workgroup computers, and you should see your other computer there..double click and you'll see that shared folder. then you can just double click on a song you want and it'll play on your other computer.

*edit: i forgot to mention that this will work if you're running windows xp..

You might want to check out VideoLAN, Icecast(which sould work pretty well with Winamp), or StreamStudio. VideoLAN should be available for whatever OS you are using, I'm not sure about the others. Icecast is commonly used for winamp apps. All of the above should work and are free, open source programs.

Also, It does seem a little silly to stream them, when you could just share a folder over your network. Just out of curiosity, why stream?

I'll check those out.. however it seems like they dont do really what i want to do

The files are actually already shared over the network, they are located on a third computer the reason why i want to stream the whole thing is that the sound card in my laptop (which is the computer that i use -- the two others are placed as "servers" else where in my apartment) really sucks ass. The sound must "come" from the computer connected to my reciever. Until now i've done this by connecting to it with windows built in remote desktop (yes, i use xp) and run winamp from there, but it is quite disturbing having to shift between the two desktops all the time when you want to change song etc.

What i want to do is stream the sound which should come from my laptops sound card over the network to the computer connected to my recievers sound card. it seems like none of the above softwares are capable of this.

Is this what you are looking to do?

    1. Open winamp on your laptop to play files.
    2. Have audio output from files played on laptop come out of soundcard on your machine connected to stereo, without having to mess with the machine connected to the stereo at all.

I see why the streaming is important now. Nice challenge. I'll try to come up with something.

    Two questions.

Do you really want to stream from the soundcard? Wouldn't it be better to do a digital stream?

How about remote controlling winamp on the stereo machine from the laptop?

Thats exactly what i wanna do! You must excuse my poor explanations, english isn't my native language..

of course must the stream be digital, it's in fact digital until the d/a-converter on the sound card makes it analog, if you could have a "virtual sound card" (in software) to capture the stream the stream would be digital..

Remote controlling winamp on the "stereo machine" is what i've done until now (with windows remote desktop), but, as i already mentioned, it's disturbing when you have to "shift" between the machines/desktops all the time..

I think you can do this using two applications Jetcast to stream media, or setup playlists form your laptop and the browseamp plugin for winamp. It is an easier(possibly less confusing) way to remote control winamp through your browser. If I were you, I would at least check out browseamp. It almost does what you're looking for.

using browseamp is just harder than using the cool remote sound server-plugin for winamp that i use now

jetcast is just yet another prog to stream mp3:s over the internet, just like shoutcast which is built in in winamp.

the thing i wanna do is stream the sound which should go to/come from my laptops sound card to the sound card on the other machine hooked-up to my stereo.
