This is a rant post about how sad the ps2 scene is.

Looking @ the xbox scene and how it flourished with the only rivalry showing between the modchip developers.

Everything from Linux to homebrew games and applications was made with appreciation. No matter how small a contribution to a scene and no matter how plain or unpolished something was, The big sites xboxhacker.net xbox-scene and many others were there to show thanks and to cover these creations.

Software, Hardware as well as opinions and thoughts were something that pushed the xbox into the ultimate entertainment system for home.

A media centre that's rivals the compatibility of a PC full of codecs and a functions that rival an expensive home entertainment system.

A games machine that emulates the following consoles perfectly.
gameboy, gameboy advance, NES, SNES, Sega master system, Sega megadrive, Atari 2600, Neo geo and also those wierd and wonderful consoles you might night of heard of.... Aari lynx, wonderswan, neogeo pocket turbographix pcengine.

Emulation of Computers has been ported.

    Amiga, commodore 64, Amstrad, even X86 :P

    pocketpcs also .... windows CE

LOL there are also a lot of web servers around the net that are actually realy xboxs

100's of tools and applications have been developed. both for the pc and the xbox.

I've only just started getting into the ps2 scene and was shocked to see all the bickering.

    PS2OWNZ is a disgrace.
i can not believe these guys having a news item asking for donations for developments. Expecially ones that obviously already existed.

I have never ever once seen a scene ask for money to develop something. The only time i have ever witnessed this was an Unemployed University student by the name of SHALLAX (porter and developer of the GENTOOX, linux specifically for xbox) wanting to help create combatibility of his work to newer xbox systems (xbox v1.6). He had nothing to gain from this and everyone supported him.

PS2OWNZ writes "On a related NOTE, we find it quite humerous that some self-proclaimed 'scene' sites diss us for accepting donations to further advances in PS2 development for ALL. It can only be assumed such sites are ran by kids who do not understand that when you get older TIME is MONEY"

What kind of an excuse is this?????????????

I wonder how many of their Operating systems or how many applications were actually purchased.

If money is to be spent on any coding @ all.... SPEND IT ON THE PRODUCTION OF THE GAMES WE LOVE.

sorry bout the rant... and i do appreciate ps2-scene for showing some backbone and enlighting ps2ownz what a scene is realy about.

i have to say i partially agree with you. as i first thought about modding my ps2 i searched on google and found ownz. a simple question and i got flamed and people wanted to buy pieces of my unit before i even attempted modding it. then i searched further and was shocked about the little things a modded ps2 can do compared to the xbox but the modder i am i tried to install a dms3.
the install didn't go very well so i asked in the dms forums because that was the only site i knew other than ownz. no really helpful answer there brought me back to xbox-scene where i found a link to this forum and i'm happy here. i got banned from ownz for posting here how stupid is that? XD

anyway, what i want to tell with this story is the ps2 scene isn't bad at all but ownz is . most people come there first and if they had the "luck" to feel their attitude they think bad about the whole scene.
the other thing you mention is the software. well, the xbox is x86 which is easy to program for everyone who has coded on a pc. the ps2 and it's emotion engine is a completely other story. much harder and that's why it can't to do as much things as the xbox for now.

The real meaning of "scene" was lost not yesterday but years (many years) ago. Look at the PC scene for example, it simply makes me puke. Anyway, the xbox scene seems to be a bit similar to the one that I loved so much almost 2 decades ago... But what could we expect anyway ? It's not the scene, but life has changed a wrong way, money is the key word these days, you really can't expect anything else from PS2/PC or from any other scene, can you ? Anyway, there are 1000000 million leechers/wannabe's, defining themselves as E L I T E. Good luck to them.

    regards, Stephen

On a related NOTE, I find it quite humerous that some self-proclaimed 'scene' sites diss us for mocking their attempts to bully "donations" from their userbase to "further advances in PS2 development," supposedly for the benefit of ALL. It can only be assumed such sites are run by people with no respect for the scene whatsoever. They apparently do not realize that most of the people behind-the-scene are OLDER individuals than they are and have been involved in the scene long before they decided to ruin it. I, personally, have been around since the days of Super Nintendo backup devices and have never heard of anyone asking for money to "further" the scene. This benefits no one but themselves and sets a dangerous precedent for further development. There have been many useful tools and whatnot released here over the years and we have never had to pay anyone to release them. For those who know their PS2 scene history, the first PS2 swap techniques were found by Paradogs and the info was released FOR FREE. The first PS2 modchip was the original Neo chip and the hex was available FOR FREE. We are currently hosting websites for several authors of useful PS2 tools and emulators right here on psx-scene.com FOR FREE. Shall I go on? Do you really think we would be where we are today if every time one of these advancements came about, the people behind it announced their findings and then asked for "donations" before releasing it? Give me a break. What PS2Ownz is doing is disgusting and only continues their long tradition of trying to ruin the PS2 scene. Hopefully, people will finally see this now and stop supporting them once and for all.

Hahaha...now this may be old news but I just found one more reason to hate Ownz. I actualy liked the site till I got my nick banned for helping someone with HD Loader + IP Ban (and they wernt even banning yet for it). Just went to the site a few min ago and got this little piece of juicy love instead of the usual IP ban message.

Your IP Address has been banned. We are now providing a service to fix broken and banned accounts. Please make sure that you INCLUDE your FORUM Name + IP Address (from Here) in the NOTES section of the PayPal Payment!

Please Click the button BELOW to continue!
So I followed the paypal link for some kicks and found this.

    Payment For: Fix Broken Accounts

    Amount: $10.00 USD
If thats not trieing to slit thier own throats I don't quite know what is. Glad it only took a few minutes of changing my IP for a few min, hopping into Efnet, and asking some "saine" people in the ownz room what other places they goto and found this place. Theres being dumb and then theres just being a

It was not just the blatant capitialism that was disturbing. Being new to ps2 i was continually skimming sites such as ps2-scene and ps2ownz for news on releases and developments. From this i noticed a trend which i found very distasteful.

As coders released their homebrews, ps2ownz took it upon themselves to review these developments in a very tasteless manner.

Updates were met with sarcasm also.

I found this the most saddest part of all, as it only discouraged new people and may even disrupt a project in progress, or cancel an update which may have been beneficial to all.

I apologise if I offended anyone here, I should not have directed my rant at the whole community, as from reading some of the replies, i see the majority feels the same way.

I think psx-scene.com will end up being the main source of infomation in the ps2-scene like xbox-scene has. Not because of it's affilitiation with each other but because of the manner in which is conducted.

I found this site first, then backup-source and then ps2ownz. After reading ps2ownz I can't get over how immature and obnoxious Z (or whoever updates the news) is. He greeted Faplink by referring to them as "<name> and his team of wankers has done it again. These guys couldn't protect their code if their life depended on it" with the title being "FAP'd again". ****ing asshole.
