Since many of you guys run Linux and are good with computers, I thought I'd ask you all this question. I have an old Pentium 266 with 224Mb of RAM, and I was looking to install either RedHat or Mandrake with KDE GUI 3.1 on it. Which distribution should I get, RedHat or Mandrake? Do you think I could run RedHat 8.0 or Mandrake 9.0 on that old box comfortably (I ran Win XP Pro on it no problems)? If not, which version of what distribution should I get, and do you Linux guys prefer RedHat or Mandrake? Thanks guys!

neither... get Debian if you r really gonna get into linux...
However, in a choice between Mandrake & Redhat... I would say RedHat (even though RedHat 8.0 does not come with mp3 support)

Yeah I'm thinking about running RedHat 8.0 on my Pentium 266 with 224 MB RAM if at all possible, I have heard that it is much more stable than Mandrake. Don't they both look about the same if you have the same GUI on them? The GUI KDE 3.1 runs on RedHat, correct? Thanks!

It should run perfectly well on that config.
Yes, they're both identical , as they both use KDE/GNOME... though Mandrake shows these highly irritating reminders when u login as root.
If ur gonna use RedHat 8.0, be sure to download the MPG123 plugin from http://staff.xmms.org/priv/redhat8/ , or else MP3s wont play.

i'd tell you Mandrake 9, atm on my r0x0ring comp -433mhz Celeron 128MB RAM 30+6+1.6GB HDD is running Mandrake Linux 9.1 Beta 2, And it works perfectly, i'd recommend mandrake, redhat, i once had it, but at that time there was no LILO and GRUB was VERY annoying to boot from the windows partition, i can't really recommend any but i'd say mandrake, you know why!

no LILO & GRUB?...heh yeah right! I would have said u were talking about the early Linux era, if I didnt know you were 13yrs old.

.... also, , since when did RedHat start booting of FAT/NTFS m8?

hehe, I will go with fooniman I think on the Mandrake 9, it seems more geared towards the first time, all around Linux user, not just stability, after all, I'd like to be able to use Linux AIM, MP3 support out of the box, etc etc.

Also fooniman, I'm honored to be on your list of respected members Makes me feel all warm and gushy inside, lol, j/k Thanks!

I heard SuSe is easier to setup/use than redhat

hehe, I like you, tieger, have a POS comp lying around. Now that I have a Media Center PC with Windows XP Media Center Edition (like Win XP Pro), I don't need this computer. So, since I'm bored, and getting cable internet this friday, I intend to download a distribution of linux just for shits and hahas. Just trying to figure out which is the best for a first time user, most are telling me Mandrake.
