Pioneer Japan today unveiled the specifications the eagerly awaited DVR-A08. It?s the first writer to support 16x DVD speed for both the DVD+R format and the DVD-R format and it will burn at 16x speed on selected 8x media. But that?s not all because it will also support ?overspeeding? of 2.4x DVD+R DL media to 4x speed making it the first 4x double layer writer!

    Pioneer DVR-A08 specifications

    Write speed
    DVD+R DL 4x
    DVD+R 16x
    DVD+RW 4x
    DVD-R 16x
    DVD-RW 4x
    CD-R 32x
    CD-RW 24x

    Read speed
    DVD-ROM 16x
    DVD-RAM 2x
    CD-ROM 40x

    Buffer size 2 MB

The DVR-A08-J is expected to be shipping in Japan in late July and will be available in three different colors; white, black and silver. This version seems to correspond to the XL version in Europe and USA so you can probably expect a cheaper DVR-A08/108 version later with a less fancy front bezel too.

Thanks to CDFreaks for the news...

I was hoping they would wait until the DVD-R DL standard had been made official. Oh well, there's always the A09

There is a review of the OEM version here:

    http://www.cdrinfo.com/Sections/Revi...rticleId=10114

Oh, yes I also missed dual layer DVD-R support, that they showed about 1 year ago with a 106. As it is a third generation drive since that, wondering why they did not include that too. Also some extremly high error rates on several disks worry me a bit and explain what is the bad part of releasing these hardwares every two months with higher speeds without testing them (and improving them) really. It looks like this tendency is on the way, and then users can blame the manufacturer just like as with the Plextor 712A too, it's really sad that users became betatesters...

    regards, Stephen
