Information for those inclined to pirate:
Remember - This site does not condone or encourage pirating in any form.
but if one was inclined to do so one only needs to follow the steps below:
1) a mod chip does not in anyway assist the pirating process - so ignore the hype
2) You will need to purchase various "circumvention devices" prior to being able to pirate.
3) these devices, believe it or not, are being sold legally every day by the biggest pirate chasing company in existence...
Required circumvention devices:
1 x Sony CD burner
1 x Sony DVD burner
1 x Sony blank CD-R
1 x Sony blank CD-RW
1 x Sony blank DVD+R
1 x Sony blank CD-R
1 x Sony Mini disk player
1 x Sony Mp3 player
1 x Sony Video recorder
1 x Sony High speed dubbing tape to tape player
1 x Sony video tape
1 x Sony cassette tape
1 x Sony DVD player that can play back DVD's VCD's CDR's and MP3's
I think you get the picture... You see it is sufficient for Sony to stick little disclaimers in their manuals, simply saying "not to be used to infringe on copyrighted material", and the courts except this and allow these circumvention devices to be sold in the open market, making Sony huge profits due to illegal use of their products.
But it is not sufficient for others to do the same and use the same disclaimers on their own products - no that is not enough...
On the flip side - Sony sees the making of profits by others as a bad thing, so they have pushed to have laws in every country altered so that other people who supply devices that do not in themselves assist in the pirating process, be classed as illegal.
You see only Sony is allowed to make profits from illegal reproduction of copyright material.
It is illegal to install a chip that allows some one to play a game they have bought the original of, but want to have it kept safe and use a backup in its' place.
It is illegal to install for the legitimate purpose of playing games you have legally bought oversees.
It is illegal to install no matter what the reason you provide - because Sony has intimidated governments around the world into doing what they are told - as Sony has a stack of money to put behind its' unjust crusades.
Sony is so two faced... as they allow the installation of MOD chips into DVD players as it sells more DVD players and regioned movies.
We installers are restricted as follows:
It is illegal to advertise chips
It is illegal to import chips
It is illegal to export chips
And it has now been made illegal to Sell chips in most countries.
But strangely it is not illegal to own a modified station... go figure...
the reverse of drug laws where it is legal to sell pipes but not to use them...
The copyright law (in most countries Oz included) has always allowed for a "qualified" person to install a circumvention device for a "qualified" customer as long as they sign a statutory declaration stating use for legal purposes only... Sony is not restricted in this way - their disclaimer is seen as sufficient in the eyes of the law...
hows that for equality!
Sony makes billions of dollars a year selling circumvention devices and equipment that directly promotes and assists the pirating process, and is legally allowed to do so.
They spend millions advertising this equipment that we - the little guy would be jailed and fined for if we had sold it ourselves prior to Sony and other big companies doing so. Even advertising it would be enough for prosecution.
Isn't it funny that really - our little chips come in right at the end of a chain of corporately sponsored pirating - and only then after the material has already been pirated by Sony equipment is the chip able to be abused and used for "illegal" purposes as well as legal.
Even though the chips are at the end of the chain and only a splash in the ocean of piracy - it is these chips sold by us little guys that are seen as the ultimate evil - all required devices above the chip in the chain are ignored (cos they have little disclaimers in their manuals which is ok for them- but not us) - we are the evil... we are the source of piracy not them... what a joke!
Seems entrenched corruption is ok but new profitable ways of making a living that don't even compare in their ability to be abused for ill purposes are not so ok. - The law is blind where corporations are concerned, corporations that avoid paying taxes where ever possible - and yet us little slaves of the world that barely scrape by are hunted down and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law because one of the biggest offenders does not like other getting on their band wagon.
Ps - I do not advocate piracy in anyway - I just hate two faced, contradictory, and selectively imposed laws aimed only at the little guy and not the main offenders.
