new pc being built, need motherboard ideas... –
i've been a loyal fan of my current motherboard for years...but i took a serious thought about why i own my board, and realized that my needs have changed.
i got the BioStar M7MIA-R 4 years ago because it was the only motherboard that supported Athlon XP processors, DDR Ram, had on board RAID, and had an ISA slot.
The ISA slot was for my PC Comms Link card.....to do PSX and Saturn hacking/translation projects with.
Now, i really don't need that slot on my main machine...i have some older systems here with ISA slots that i can put that particular card in. That card doesn't require the power of an Athlon XP processor either.
so now i'm at a crossroads....my motherboard's floppy controller went out, and i did the obvous thing....bought another BioStar M7MIA to replace it.
but i haven't put it in yet, and i wanted a solid opinion for someone.
What is the absolute BEST motherboard out there that can do the following (* for mandatory/must have feature, in order of need):
*1. Support Athlon XP processors (most preferably the whole range, palomino to barton, but MUST start at palomino)
*2. DDR Ram
*3. AGP 8x or higher
*4. RAID for IDE (i need 4 individual PATA IDE channels)
*5. on board LAN (gigabit lan would be nice, but not nessescery)
*6. at least 5 pci slots
*7. Front USB 2.0
*8. 266 - 400 FSB (for use with my palomino core processor till i get somethign better)
9. 6.1 channel sound with optical (not nessescery as i'd probably up it to an Audigy anyway)
10. Native SATA RAID (wanted but not nessescery)
you'll notice that i'm trying to replace cards that are in my current system....my SATA card, my ethernet card, my USB 2.0 card, etc. if i could, i'd even replace my TV Tuner card.
anyway, help is appreciated
