I will try to make this as quick and painless for many of you who do the whole tl;dr, but I make no guarantees. I will go on tangents and chase a lot of rabbits, so just bear with me.
For those of you who know, I have been having issues with my modem and router recently. I would be connected via my Netgear MR814 v1 and RCA cable modem when out of nowhere, I'd lose net. I would have access to my local network, but no internet. The strange thing is if I plugged my modem directly to the comp, it would connect immediately.
After a while, I began to suspect the router, seeing as it would be the one to lose connection. So I looked around craigslist and found a Linksys WRT54G v2 which worked fine the first day, then the next day I had lost connection again.
At this point, I suspected the modem, but figured there might be a problem with heat since the modem was sitting atop a desk where I keep my ubuntu desktop and CRT monitor. I know it generates a bit of heat, but it's well ventilated. Seeing how my room heats up either way, I decided to test if maybe the connection would remain stable by moving the modem out of the bedroom.
So I have now moved the modem to the living room, it's on a cool shelf with open ends for ventilation. The WRT54G is sitting next to it, supplying wireless to my laptop, a 6' line to my PS2 and using the 25' line I formerly had on the PS2 running into the ubuntu desktop.
With all this setup, you guys are probably wondering what my question is now... I have the tendency to wire my laptop occasionally when I want to stream high def movies from my ubuntu desktop since they will lag if I stream them via wireless. I also do SMB testing for SMS and OPL on it.
I had the bright idea of wiring the MR814 where it used to sit in the desk in my room. I plugged a cable from the WRT54G into the WAN port in the MR814. I now have both internet and wireless networks on both routers, I have my ubuntu desktop plugged in the MR814 and people can access my site.
This all works fine, but I cannot view my SMB files which are on the MR814 on my WRT54G local network. To put it simply, I want to find out if there's a way to share the local network files between these two routers. I've included a semi-schematic for you to better understand.
I hope if you guys know of a way, that I can use the following components in a way that I can have wireless internet for my laptop (which I already have by connecting to either router) and a way to share my files from my ubuntu desktop to both my laptop and PS2. Again, I could easily just plug the desktop to the WRT54G, but I like wiring my laptop in my room, too. It would just be troublesome to run it wirelessly when trying to stream some files.
Thanks for the time and hopefully someone can help me figure something out.
