but yeah.. i guess it depends on what your interested in most.. maybe something to do with your profession?
You could try using Joomla or another CMS. There's plenty of templates that you could use as a base and build on.
From there you could always add a something like a blog, forum or gallery and integrate it/them into your site.
It really depends on what you want your site to be about and where you see it going.

So if you want to keep your site simple, use CSS... and do add a background.
A good background can do wonders for websites.
well looks empty, but with some on it will be different.
It's kind of hard to give you suggestions since it's a little empty, but my biggest suggestion would be to add some sort of framing around the body text to give it some dimension over the background.
I would also suggest doing the same thing with the links on the left side.
Some pr0n or warez will do.. :p
