LokiTorrent has been shutdown by the MPAA. A notice placed on the front pages says this:
There are websites that provide legal downloads. This is not one of them.

This website has been permanently shut down by court order because it facilitates the illegal downloading of copyrighted motion pictures. The illegal downloading of motion pictures robs thousands of honest, hard-working people of their livelihood, and stifles creativity. Illegally downloading movies from sites such as these without proper authorization violates the law, is theft, and is not anonymous. Stealing movies leaves a trail. The only way not to get caught is to stop.
That makes it two major torrent sites shut down recently by the MPAA. This looks to be more serious than what the RIAA has been doing. Instead of stopping individual users, the MPAA is being smart and taking out the big guns.

There are still a million different mediums to share these kinds of files though, Bittorrent is just one of many. The only way to really stop it is to poke into everyone's private lives and arrest people by the barrelful. It's just one step closer to totalitarianism.

Damn, All those tens of thousands of dollars donated to that site...I'm glad I didn't donate to the 'legal fund.'

Whateva, I do what I want

How safe is FTP compared to Newsgroups or IRC? Can the MPAA or authorites trace you on those like bit torrent?

For those that don't know Loki was ordered to provide the MPAA with access to all their logs and server data relating to its BitTorrent service, thus giving the MPAA a list of those who have used LokiTorrent to illegally distribute its content.

FTP should be pretty damn private, though it's not the preferred way to pirate stuff nowadays, but it's still done.

Newsgroups are still chugging along and with the right news provider, you can do whatever you want without fear of reprisal.

All the MPAA is going to do is force it underground. I predict more IRC based torrent channels.

I still prefer Newsgroups myself. Comcast cut off the beloved ATTBI news server so we're stuck with a 2GB a month limit.

Once I get a source of reliable income I'll pay for a premium host with better retention (old ATTBI server had 13 hours of retention!).

That would be a good idea! I always felt the drawback with BT was the need for servers to host the actual .torrent files. Webservers are way too easy to shut down with a C&D letter from the right people, but fserves are damn near impossible to fully shut down. You distribute the releases so that if you remove one, more can easily spring up.
Efnet, #torrents - easy as pie.
