I liked some of Tupac even though I am not a fan of rap as a general rule.

"About killing "talented artists and good music"... Who judges what is good music and who is talented at all ? For many people Eminem and Britney Spears are talented. Also their musics are good. Who should have to judge on these talent related questions ?..." ect, ect..

That is like saying people who use steriods or other artificial enhancers are not negatively effecting sports. Today most atheletes believe they have to use artificial enhancements just to be on an even playing field with their peers in sports. In todays markets if you are not selling tons and tons you are wasting resources that could be better spent maximizing profits by developing the next Britney clone. That is pretty sad because how many new Hedrix's do you see emerging from boy band? Plus formulated bands such as boy bands or Britney clones just reproduce proven effective material, ensure the same crap will be reproduced again and again. This would and has negatively effected the music industry in my belief as nothing stagnate ever lasts long.

I can and I do. I don't think you or most average consumers realize the extent that marketing plays in our lives. There are reasons why we buy the things we buy, and rarely are the reasons because we are buying a quality product. Why do you think that the majority of advertisements target youth audiences? It's not because young children have more disposable cash, it is because it is all about training consumers at a young age to consume certain products. It is believed by the time you are an adult you have already been trained. That it is much more effective to spend resources effectively by training the next generation of consumers before their competition does.

I realize that I am not effectively marketing a product or an idea, nor am I attempting too. I am simply stating my opinions based on the information that I have been taught by schools that produce marketers that train consumers to buy products including M&M. There is little doubt that marketing is a huge influence on rap, look to the endorsements in the rap videos, or the fact that Jay Z's business partner is a marketer.

And "You hear an artist, you like there music, so you buy their album! PLAIN AND SIMPLE!" Is a pretty narrow minded view point in my opinion. I mean why did you hear this music in the first place? Because it is heavily advertised. Once upon a time record labels would pay big money to radio stations to play their artists singles on heavy rotation. You hear the music because you fit a demographic that this music is marketed towards. It is trendy and cool because your friends are also part of this demographic and in an enclosed environment of reinforcement from your peers the belief that this is a really great album is reinforced. I am not trying to sell anything here, nor do you know who I am in real life, so I don't feel the need to make the effort to market my views effectively. I don't think you realize that marketing is down to a science, and just how effective it is. It is a trade just like electrician because it has been proven again and again to work.

Marketers try high-tech tool to push brain's 'buy button'

I saw this today and thought to show it to you. It is a report on marketers looking at using MRI's on focus groups to better analyze and interpret what it takes to trigger the buying impulses. Think it is science fiction? I read a report from Sweden not too long ago about a pheromone that encourages a higher rate of spending habits in people exposed to it. You can think this is bullshit or not, but the truth is that these experiments are pretty expensive, as are MRI's, but the fact remains that there is funding for these projects. And if you think about that then you begin to realize that there must be a profitable return on such ventures as the people funding them have been pretty successful at accumulating wealth.

And in regards to the M&M commercials with a voice played over the samples of the new songs, if this was not the most effective method of encouraging consumers to purchase that was legally available to marketers, do you think they would spend millions on producing these TV commercials, and spending further millions on buying commercial ad space on TV channels? If it wasn't for government restrictions they would still be putting cocaine in soft drinks to encourage consumption and subliminal ads in their advertisements.

And the phrase, ''BIGGEST RECORDING ARTIST IN THE WORLD'' is just the result of another marketing plan in motion. I am willing to bet that the Beatles still have a higher record sales count than M&M, but not surprisingly you believe that M&M has topped this record, because that was the intent of this title. ''BIGGEST RECORDING ARTIST IN THE WORLD'' presently touring? ''BIGGEST RECORDING ARTIST IN THE WORLD'' presently recording? ''BIGGEST RECORDING ARTIST IN THE WORLD'' pushed by Dr Dre? ''BIGGEST RECORDING ARTIST IN THE WORLD'' that is blond? The term is intentionally vague as to not guarantee any direct promise of validation and to cause the reader to infer that M&M has sold more records than any other artist ever.

Do you honestly consider MTV movie awards to be an impartial source? MTV has a vested interest in encouraging consumption of these consumer goods are they encourage the watching of MTV to watch music videos. Not to mention keeping advertisers happy who either recieve benifiet from high sales because their corporations own shares in the recording label, or one of their big clients do, or they get contracts to do marketing work for corporations that do directly profit from the labels success. I encourage you to find an impartial source that stacks M&M sales to the sales of the Beatles at their peak. It might be the first step in forcing you to realize the effect marketing has on how we perceive things in an effort to get consumers to consume more.

You seem like a smart guy Evil Homer, and I am not bashing M&M specifically and never originally intended to. My points are valid for just about any big celebrity and many other commercial products. Here is a link for a GNN video I found really insightful about marketing. That I have chosen business (the trade of making money) as my vocation does not mean that I am not disgusted daily by the lack of ethics in business, particularly the lack of ethics in advertising.

Thank you 9HomerSimpson9. You are not the only person to suggest a life of politics to me, and to be honest I have been considering it for the past few years. Hopefully after I have completed my goals in the business world I will enter politics. If I still find the injustices I see today to be just as intolerable as I find them today, twenty or so years from now Canadian politics may have a new highly opinionated member of parliament.
