help with hdd

need to know how long does it take to formatt a new hdd for an external? my external hdd has been formatting for 3 hours now is their something i'm doing wrong? all i want it for is to store media and stuff can i just get a quick format?

if it's brand new a quick format is ok, 3 hours seems like it's been going a little to long unless it's over 100gb ?

yeah it is a 120gb i found out i was formatting it to also compress information. i canceled it and did a quick format.
