I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this centrino technology stuff. Is it really comprable to P4 2.2Ghz and above. I am trying to choose between the Sony Viao FRV28 and Acer TravelMate 290. Both are pretty much the same except the SOny comes with 2.8GHz chip and the Acer has a 1.3GHz Centrino chip, a faster DVD burner, and intergrated wireless also is a lot thinner. I plan on using either one for DVD burning, and school/science stuff. I was playing around with both at bestbuy and noticed the Acer's mouse sometimes got hung up when opening a lot of programs and playing sounds. Has anyone else had this problem

    Any advice would be appreciated.

paid 2300 for my compaq laptop 2 years ago...it's worth about 700 now, just another thing to think about when buying a lappy, i recomend a 4-500 dollar laptop, and then a good desktop...use the laptop for things you need mobility for, and the desktop as your workhorse
    EEEEEEWWWWW... girls gots cooties

The mouse problem could just be from over use, seeing as how much abuse those displays take.

thats a good point, something I haven't really thought about, but I need something powerful while I am on the road or in lab, this way I also don't have to transfer data between computers. Its better for me to have everything on one computer. While I am at home I can work upstairs or downstairs and keep an eye on the kids. So any suggestions on which laptop to get.

Many of those Lappy's have a serious memory bottleneck. Those P4's were designed to run with RAMBUS memory. A 2.4 is running on a 533 FSB--the memory in most lappys will only run 266 at best. That's a bit of a snag right there. Don't worry so much about the CPU speed and spend the extra money on extras--especially memory. A high end P3 with 256/512MB RAM with a fast hard drive on W2K/XP will run about the same as the entry level P4 that's been starved of memory and quality hard drive. At work, I've got a P3 800 lappy with 256MB RAM that runs almost neck and neck with an eMachine 2.4 GHz Celey PC with 256MB DDR (both running W2K). If that PC had been set up with RAMBUS, there would be no comparison. This isn't just conjecture, I've actually benchmarked them with SiSandra out of curiousity.

If it ain't broke don't try to fix it! But, hell if you can tweak that bastard just a little bit more....hehehe.

just don't get an intel chip, ESPECIALLY the celeron, and avoid these companies like the plague...you WILL be ripped and get crappy products...@ least from my experience:

    IBM
    Dell
    Gateway
    Compaq
    HP
Sony is a bit iffy in quality, depends on the products

the only laptops i've ever used that i liked were from Toshiba and Apple
