Going Wireless! (need help tho)
Going Wireless! (need help tho) –
02-20-2005,06:03 AM
So I'm getting DSL in a couple of week and am thinking of going wireless so that my two computer in my house can both get on the new. I'm not sure what's require so I'm screaming out for help....
1. What requirements/equipments do both of the PC need?
2. Should I get a Router or an Access Point?
3. What else do I need?
thanks for any advice...

You have three choices:
KEY:
PC1 = computer 1
PC2 = computer 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 1 - cheapest.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PC2 has 1 wireless network card.
PC1 has 2 network cards. A normal network card, and a wireless card. The normal card is used to connect to your modem. The other card is used to stream internet over the airwaves to PC2.
Advantage - Least expensive
Disadvantage - PC1 must be near the internet connection, and the modem. PC1 must be running, and have client software installed to serve the internet to PC2.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 2 - cheaper
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PC1 has 1 normal network card.
PC2 has 1 wireless network card
You buy a WIRELESS ROUTER, which sends internet through a cable to PC1, and through the airwaves to PC2.
Advantage - Internet is always on to all computers, more secure network due to hardware router.
Disadvantage - PC1 must be near the internet connection, and the wireless router
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Option 3 - cheap
--------------------------------------------------------------------
PC1 has 1 wireless network card
PC2 has 1 wireless network card
You buy a WIRELESS ROUTER, which serves internet to either PC.
Advantage - Internet is always on to all computers, more secure network due to hardware router.
Disadvantage - Most expensive option

Option 2 is definite choice
cuz when they come to hook it up they will put the connection hard wired on one PC, after that you just get a router and a network card and you're good to go

Thanks a bunch guys...For a moment, I thought I was the only one in this world whose actually interest in getting my wireless done...Cool...Option 2 or 3 it is...
Got another question....Instead of a wireless Card, can I get a wireless USB adapter?
Do they work the same way....because I hate installing cards and i like the portability of USB....
Would the provider know I'm doing this? And is this usually allowed?

since you are getting dsl check to see if your isp offers a wireless modem. you would just have to say with their contract for a year though. and go get the cards and scan for a signal you may be surprised that someone near your home has a signal for you and you can wait a little longer on buying the dsl service.
just a thought

Hahaha...that would be a nice trick but I don't feel right snooping around for people's signal...who knows, if I get desperate, i'll do it

there are a few people around my area with wireless. i can just sit outside their house and browse the net on my pda. i dont really do it since its easier to just use your own. id use it if i got in to trouble for not paying my bills though

sure but ain't it be weird if someone saw you sitting on their sidewalk day after day...they would think you're spying on them or something...
