Geez, when my girlfriend and I started dating, well, she took -me- out and it costed like 9 dollars. We went to this little restaurant and shared a salad and then a slice of cheesecake. It's not that she didn't have more (well, I don't know, maybe she did) money, but she was saying that she wasn't into materialism and such, and making sure I wasn't. It's way more romantic to just be talking anyway, not going down to some store and buying 70 dollars worth of junk.
Also, on a first date, I think it's important not to jump into things (you know, like spending $200 instead of $20) or the person you're taking out might get kind of intimidated.
I remember once when this guy took me out on our first date, I was reading the menu in a restaurant and said "Wow! It's expensive," (it was some meal) "to get 'x' meal." I was about to finish that statement off with a "I doubt I'd spend that much money on a single meal!" but instead he said "Do you want it? Huh? I don't mind. Really. I'll buy you anything you want." Right there I knew the date had already reached it's high point because I was on a date with a guy trying to buy love (or sex, whatever
).
So just do something romantic, not expensive.
