I recently rented 'Starsky and Hutch' and I figured I would burn it just for the hell of it. Why not!? When I inserted it in, and did a simulated test, I received a error saying it's 'copy-protected.' Is there anyway around it?

well...I'm not suppose to tell ya how...since you rented the DVD...but you'll buy one..right?(wink*) after you made a copy so you can watch it while you went searching for it at WAl-Mart....okay...it's call DVDdecrypter....and...if you need more infos...go to videohelp.com....they'll tell a million things you can do....have fun...
Once you've got the DVD decrypted and on your hard drive, use something like DVDShrink (free) or Intervideo DVDCopy (commercial but best quality) to downsize it so it will fit on a DVD-R.
There are several programs,
- CloneDVD for decrypted files, that you already decrypted using DVDDecrypter
- DVDCopyXpress (will do everything on the fly, will take care of the protection, hehe)
- DVDShrink can decrypt and recompress on the fly
- DVDFab
- DVD2One (files have to be decrypted first with DVDDecrypter)
and some more other programs. If the original is bigger than 4.3 gb you can recompress it or split the movie onto two dvd-r's. (todays dvd-r prices are so low, when quality matters I suggest this later, as recompressing a 8 gb movie into a 4.2 will result in quality loss, and sometime when a fast recompressor is used it can be easily noticed... unfurtunatelly I had this problem with Saving Private Ryan as qualit was so low, in the end I went and bought the original...)

All right, I downloaded DVD Decrypter, but I need another program to burn it onto a DVD? I heard a few people mention DVD Shrink, what about the 3.1 version?
I have a few programs already on the PC, they came with it when I purchased it a month ago. Here they are:
Nero Smartstart
InterVideo WinDVD 4/Creator/WinRip
Lg DVD Writer Solution - PowerDVD/Power Producer/etc
InterActual
Just d/l DVD Shrink...If it's the same program I'm thinking of all you gotta do is d/l it, the movie will load (once you pick what drive it's in), and the select the quality # (1-10). If you hit like 1 then it makes it smaller (IE something goes from 8GB to 7GB), and so on down the ladder. Every number makes it smaller so that it will fit onto a regular dvdr (4.5 GB). Then just pretty much burn it....Not a hard program to use
I downloaded DVD Decrypter, I ripped it to my HDD, and then I downloaded DVD Shrink, it's currently encoding the file. Do I need any other tool to complete the process, with this particular movie - Starsky and Hutch?
Will I need to download 'cloneDVD' or something similiar or will either of Decrypter or Shrink burn the back-up file to a DVD-R?
Thanks
you would need some programs to burn the file back to DVD...Nero 6 can do that...DVDdecrypter can only burn ISO file so if you don't have nero, you would need a tool(forgot what it's call) to turn your file into ISO before burning them with DVDdecrypter....I'm sure there are other methods of doing it....
you can get all the know hows and tools for free at www.afterdawn.com nero 6 is there along with the guide section on how to use shrink (which they now have a newer version) along with dvdecypter.
