Hey, I just recently bought a new computer, and I bought a DVD burner with it, made by LG. It's a multi-burner, it can read and write just about every media including DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW, DVD-RAM, and all variants of CD. Also, I have a LG CD-ROM Drive.

I have a few questions about it, please bare with me, I don't have much knowledge when it comes to burning.

1)It's called a 'DVD-RAM Recorder' does it affect the way I burn CD's/DVD's?

2)When copying a Audio Original CD, do I put it in the DVD Burner, and the blank media in the CD-Rom drive, or is it reverse? I would say the second option, but I obviously don't know?

3)How do I determine the speed of my DVD-RAM drive - In the Nero Info tool it says, "Write speed - 24x" and "Read speed - 32x"

4)I was looking to purchase some media, and I came across this, "Important Note: 4X speed DVD-R media is intended for use with 4X writers. Please contact your hardware manufacturer regarding compatibility of your non-4X DVD-R writer with high speed media." Does this concern myself?

5)What use does the CD-Rom drive serve? Can I use it in anyway for making a copy of a DVD to a DVD, no!? Only when copying a CD until another CD!

6)Is Nero 6 a decent tool, or should I look for something else. I will be making a lot of copies of PS2 games in the near future. Is Nero 6 worthwhile?

    1) DVD-RAM is a burning standard. I'm not sure how to explain it further. Someone else will.

    2) Blank media in burner and original in cd drive. Or if you want you could just use the burner drive and put the original in first and make an image and then put the blank media in

    3) Read speed is how fast you can read files on a CD. Write speed is how fast you can write files to a CD. Those are speeds for CDs though and you have a different speed for DVD. I'd imagine it would be 4x DVD write or 8x

    4) Basically it means that you should not be burning slower than 4x on that specific media

    5) You cannot use the CDROM drive for copying DVDs in any way. At best you could use it to read a CD for copying.

    6) Nero 6 is a good program.

These are simple answers so wait for someone to give better ones. It appears that you have zero experience with burning so you're probably going to end up with some coasters. I would advise you to read up on burning and don't ask the PS2 copying questions on this forum as I believe it isn't allowed.

alcohol 120 is another excellent program for backing up your games that you own.

without knowing the model number of your drive, no one can really help you as to how fast it burns, and all that good stuff. I would be willing to be that it is probably at least a 4x drive, seeing as how the 12x are coming out now, if you truly just got a new computer.

Good luck with your new hobby.

LG Multi DVD Drive - GSA-4082B

    Write Speed:
    DVD-R 1x, 2x, 4x, 8x

So, if it's capable of writing at 8x, should I go with media that is compatible with the write speed of 8x, or is 4x good enough?

DVD-R FujiFilm, Maxwell, TDK are recommended for my LG Multi DVD Drive - GSA-4082B

I was hoping Ritek would of been one of the recommended, but it should still be fine!?

Any difference between the media below:
Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 Silver Matte on Top
Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 Silver Shiny on Top
Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 Ridata Branded on Top
    Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 White Inkjet Printable
    Ritek 4X DVD-R G04 White Inkjet Printable/Ridata Hub Branded

stick with the 2x, type dvd media save yourself some money. the faster does not always mean better. alot of games/movies are better burned at 2x to avoid skipping and freezing on the ps2 or even your dvd player.

And another tip. Go pick up some CD spindles before you go to DVD. Because if you make a mistake it's better to ruin a CD than a DVD.

All right, I'l check it out. What's the difference between the difference Ritek DVD-R media.

    Silver shiny Top
    Silver Matte Top
    Silver Matte - Ridata Brand
    White Inkjet Printable

Does it really matter, I'll likely just go with the Ritek Silver Matte style.

    Formatted Size:
I noticed some are 'blank' while others say, 'not formatted.'

I don't think there's a difference at all. Just maybe the label? The DVD should be the same. And I'm not sure but if it says not-formatted its a DVD-RW (Someone correct me if I'm wrong) and if it says blank its a DVD+/-R.
