Dreamcast versions
To make a long story short, i lent my dreamcast to my friend ben like 2 weeks ago. it was one of the ones that plays copies without a modchip or bootdisc or anything like that. Well, his dad kind of dropped a tv on the dreamcast and broke it :p . He said he would buy me another one, but i thought id buy it myself and show him the receipt so he can reimburse me and such. just wondering how you tell the different between the earlier models that play copies and the later models that dont play copies.

I thought they all played backups...I remember mine still play them and I bought mine right before they stop manufactoring them....you can always take it back and exchange for a different one if one didn't work...

I'm pretty sure there aren't different versions for DC like PS2 has. The only time Dreamcast had different versions is outlined on this page:

That's just special editon ones.

I think it was all Dreamcasts built after January 2001 that could not play backup games.

is there any way to tell if it was made before january 2001? thanks

I dont think there is any definite way of determining when a console was manufactured, but if it has a "1" in a giant circle on the bottom, and is the WK series, it should work. Here is a picture as an example. Also, all PAL consoles seem to boot CD-R's just fine.
The image on the left is a Dreamcast which supports booting CD-R's.

It clearly says on the bottom when it was Manufactured, this is how i choose mine, based on them. Look at your pictures you can see in the first console, in the second silver part: Manufactured June, 2000
