This is something that's bugged me for a long time. I don't know how or why this started, but it's definitely wrong. And I find it particularly bad when it's used right here on a PlayStation forum.
What am I talking about? The PlayStation 1. The original PlayStation has a few abbreviations. PS and PS1 for the original model, PSOne for the slim model. However, one abbreviation that does NOT go with the PS1 is PSX. PSX is NOT a PS1. PSX is a PS2! Here's your proof:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PSX_%28DVR%29
The PSX was a PS2 revision released in Japan that had a built in DVR. It didn't take off in Japan and was never released anywhere else. It bothers me that even right here on a PlayStation forum, it's used incorrectly. I don't know about you, but here on this "PSX PS2 PS3 Scene Hacking Modchip & Jailbreak Community" forum, I've never seen a single thread about hacking a PS2 DVR (PSX).
I'm not mad or anything, I would just like to spread the word to end this incorrect acronym usage. Let's all act like the intelligent gamers we are, and use the term PS, PS1 or PSOne.

I believe you're overthinking it.

Playstation 1 was originally dubbed Playstation Experimental by Sony and devs alike when it was released.
PlaysStation EXperimental -> PSX
So it's not incorrect acronym usage, though I do see where you're coming from. Also expecting to squash nickname tradition with a forum post? Good luck!
I personally believe it deserves to be named PSX even more than the failed DVR released in japan you're refering to.

Yeah and GIF files are supposed to be pronounced "Jiff" files. And Aluminum is supposed to be called Aluminium. The problem is, nobody really cares.

Yes, but the acronym of PSX didn't catch on until after the PSOne was released, so nobody really knew what the experimental name for the PlaySataion was.
Also, I'm not expecting to squash anything. I'm simply spreading knowledge. It's just kind of one of my pet peeves, ya know? :/

Wow... kids these days.
I've been around since the Atari 8-bit scene and can assure you that PSX was being used very early in the original PlayStation's lifecycle, long before the PsOne.
Those of you who were around in the cheat cart days will remember my old PSX site from the 1990's. Here's some blasts from the past.

Technically, Sony themselves started the 'name calling' of PSX in there file system for the Playstation Console/Games.
As an example, just look at your PS2's TITLE.DB, it is a system file for PS1 games and one of the lines in it is:
PSX.EXE=0,0,0,0,0,0,0,0,XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX XXXXXXXXXX
Its very easy to see why people started to call Playstation/PlaystationOne as "PSX/PS1", they were doing that before Sony decided to even make a real PSX console and most of the world never even heard of that console outside of Japan.

Actually after the Playstation One came out they started using 'PS1' for the Playstation One, PSX for the original Playstation consoles. But since the games were the same for both, PSX/PS1 was common to use either and still is.

PSOne was the name given to the friggin slimline PSX for crying out loud, how long after PSX release was that (5 - 7 years?). I remember watching videos of devs calling it PSX on release and reading about why it was called that about 2 - 4 months after the european release.

I was going to go into further details but...don't need to now.

And yeah, I won't go into detail here, but gary was kind enough to educate me partially on the PS2 chipping scene. And, well, I've read the first half of the war story and --wow...
Would love to hit you up for the second half some day.
