I have a DC that will do just that which I'll let you have for a reasonable cost. Includes 3 VMUs, a MegaMemory card, 2 controllers, Skies of Arcadia, etc.

PM me for details if you're interested...

I think all the units made after January 2001 can no longer play cd-r games. You still can't make backups yourself though, but i'm assuming you knew that already.

    actually.......

With a DC Coders cable from lik-sang.com , it is possible, you can then hook your DC up to your PC and make the backups by ripping the data from the CD drive on the DC to an ISO file on your computer. That's how most make their backups.
-US Nintendo Wii unmodded (waiting for modchip and install)
    -US Playstation 2 v15 SCPH-77001 w/Crystal Chip Pro 2.0
-US V1.0 Xbox w/Xenium Ice and X2 custom BIOS

It's not quite that simple, the coder cable alone won't let you backup all of the games data.

The coders cable will just rip the data to the pc, there's a lot more after that to get it to be a functional backup. I gave up doing it myself, too damn complicated. And I believe any DC manufactured before Oct, 2000, will play backups just fine. After that they'll still play won't they? They just have to be burned in a different way I thought.
