My 80 gig western digital is making a strange clicking noise when I turn on my pc. When it gets to the window loading screen, it reboots itself. I cant even get into safe mode without it rebooting. Is this a bad hard drive? I am now using it as a secondary hd and it works fine. All of my stuff is still there. I even downloaded the tools from their website and ran a diagnostcis test and it said my hd is fine. What could be the problem?

    TIA

Since you can connect it as a secondary drive without any problems, I would just back up all the important files from that HD and format the drive and re-use it. I've done that with several HDs in the past.

    buy "spinrite 6"

put your hdd in a plastic bag, and put it in the freezer for about 20 minutes.

take it out, run spinrite on recovery level. onces its finished, freeze for another 20 minutes, then recover your data in windows.

the clicking is a symptom of a dying hdd.

Clicking is bad. My dad had a 160 GB maxtor crash on him so he had to go back to compusa and he bought a seagate which is running great.

yes, spinrite is the way to go

also overheat'n can make ur hdd harder to spin and read stuff, so cooling it down is a good way to go, i just take my hdd off and leave it in the open for 24 hrs or till it's cold, but if ur in a hurry putting it in a fridge can help. lol

i had this exact problem about 6 months ago, and spinrite was really really slow, by the rate it was going, it SAID it'll take 17 DAYS!!!

so i just made it seconday on my 2nd computer, dragged all important documents, and then used "Darik's Boot and Nuke" to format it

and now, since i fear it MIGHT happen in the future, i only use it as a seconardy hdd

o ya, it was a MAXTOR 120 gb hdd, i'm starting to hate maxtor now... GO SEAGATE!
